    1950's, 60's and 70's aerials

This is exciting. I'm glad you are looking at adding these. Anything that helps to fill the 50-year gap between the 1930s and 1980s aerials would be most welcome. As far as Ocean County goes, I am sure you have seen this page, which says that their layers include "Aerial Photography," but I do...

    Berlin Peak

I have been up "Stony Mount" (to clarify, not the same thing as Berlin Peak) several times. I believe it's located on hole 8 on the blue course. Part of the pathway up: These guys are all over the place up there in the summertime, sunning themselves on the rocks: And here is a tree that...

‘It is a crisis’: N.J. cranberry farms struggle amid worst drought they’ve ever seen

    Historical landcover data

Thought I would mess around with this a bit, since I found the NJGIN data that Boyd linked interesting. You can actually open most of those landcover datasets in the online ArcGIS Map Viewer, and then use the Filter feature to only show cedar swamps, if you select the right values, which is...

    Visiting the Monster

It's possible, but I think more likely late 1977 or early 1978. It seems like the reason that it's out there was related to a project to extract about 120 acres' worth of dead cedar that partially burned in a July 1977 fire. I think I can just barely see the machine on Boyd's really nice...

    Visiting the Monster

Great photos, thank you for posting more of them. I had seen only a couple of these before. Incidentally it seems that most (all?) of the content that was hosted on "teegate.njpinebarrens.com" in years past is now gone, and largely was not publicly archived, which is unfortunate. Even photos...

    Visiting the Monster

Yes, although Guy has already done most of the legwork in previous posts in identifying it and giving some backstory, so I did not bother taking a lot of detailed pictures of serial numbers. You can read his post here. Some things still remain unanswered for me, though. I am not sure exactly...

    Visiting the Monster

These extraordinarily dry conditions made for a good opportunity to make a trek out to a location that is normally quite difficult to get to. My brother and I entered at Rockwood yesterday in his well-equipped 4x4 and made it all the way to within a few tenths of a mile of our quarry, without...

    Batsto Country Living Fair

Oh, they did? That's great. I must have been there too early in the day for it. I saw that they had the whole side of the mill opened up, which I haven't seen in a very long time, but while I was there the spillway was closed and it looked like the Park Service guys were showing Park Police...

Increased risk of fire spread today

Different from the Mary Ann Forge one? Is that still going?

Increased risk of fire spread today

VIIRS satellite is detecting heat anomalies off Carranza again - but this seems a little odd, because this area just burned pretty thoroughly in the Tea Time Hill fire in July. It may be in that one little section that did not burn very hot?

    Forked River Mountain Hike

This proposal is still hanging around in both the Assembly and the Senate in the current session, I think. Who knows if it will go anywhere, though.

    Forked River Mountain Hike

At least one version of this is sold as a "wrap kit" with decals in all kinds of color combinations and you can do it yourself at home. The companies that sell them list them as "for retired plates only" or "for showroom use, not DMV approved" etc. Likely illegal and I'm sure you can be ticketed...

    Northern Lights Over the Pines

The absolute strongest I saw it get was at Batsto - the blood-red sky behind the mansion really was visible with the naked eye. At other points, long exposures with the camera were necessary to really see the shape and color properly. Adjusting your eyes to the darkness also helps significantly.

    Indian Chief Tavern

I've heard rumors for many years that ShopRite was going to put a liquor store there, but it never happened. Maybe it'll go forward now that the tavern has been demolished.

    Northern Lights Over the Pines

A bonus phenomenon: comet C/2023 A3 over the Pine Plains just after sunset last night. After this month it won't be back for about 80,000 years.
