Possibly, but that road has always been popular with wheelers. I spoke with an old piney once who told me he used to send wheelers down that road in the 70's just so his friend could make some $ pulling them out later LOL. Hopefully it doesn't become the new 1/4 mile. Jeff

the red pit has always been posted. I believe it is Haines or now NJCF. we always called it the red pit because it is filled with red sand like on nearby red road (stephens road)

In the 1930's-1940's I think grid ditches were still being used for mosquito control which wouldn't have looked like this.

It sounds like you were at spring hill, which is a very beautiful spot for vistas. I have never heard it referred to as stargazers pit, but it is a good spot for that. There is another pit in that area to the east, the red pit, but it is just a pit without the hill. Jeff

upon further thought and study of aerial photos, I think the large depression might be the result of the ground near it being raised to provide a land bridge for a cranberry operation that pre-dates aerial photos. So the depression could be an illusion, and the ground next to it is just higher...
