    My that's a large spider

I caught this fellow in the family room last week and ejected him from the house. Either he's back or he has an identical cousin. For comparison purposes those linoleum squares are 4" on a side, so he is running a little over 2". Any of you bug guys want to weigh in on the ID? My...

Red Oak Grove and Howardsville 5-26-08

Ok, on to Red Oak Grove and Howardsville. My visits to both yielded much less dramatic finds than at Union Clay, although there was evidence of historical activity in each location. My main interest at Red Oak Grove was to search the site thoroughly for any structural remains, cellar holes...

    Union Clay Company 5-26-08

Yesterday I went to the pines alone with the object of visiting three sites I had made brief visits to previously: Red Oak Grove, Union Clay, and Howardsville. I figured that by going alone I could take my time and canvass the sites thoroughly. I was armed with GPS plots of the corner points at...

    Kiln? Furnace? Or something else?

I apologize in advance for again injecting non-barrens-related material, but you guys are the best source of informed speculation that I have available :). Stumbled across this while exploring some old roads in the Highlands this afternoon. It's is located west of Ridge Road, not far from...

    A little detective work

Hi guys. I appeal for your assistance with a couple of non-piney related historical detective questions. I'm writing up a post for my blog on the Chester Branch of the CRNJ and the old Chester Furnace. I walked the old right of way on Sunday and visited the furnace site. I'm trying to identify...

    Whites Bog and Buckingham, 4-19-08

With the wife and kids on vacation for the week I decided to head south for some uninhibited exploring today... Unfortunately I ran smack into a wall of traffic ten miles long on the turnpike. I decided to get off at 8A and take 130, and that's when I realized that while I may know the roads...

    New version of Google Earth

Version 4.3 was released a day or two ago, and I just noticed it this evening. They revamped the nav controls, improved the rendering some, and the streaming seems a little smoother as well. Nothing dramatic. Anyway, it's available at earth.google.com.

    Haze's Crossway

Hey guys, the other day when I was out in the woods my friend Jack and I got ourselves onto Hays Crossway, south of the Bulltown Bogs. As I mentioned in another thread it isn't much of a road, but we managed to get most of the way along. Today in Jersey Genesis I was reading the chapter on...

    The Cafe at Buzby's

Stopped in with a couple of friends today to see Marilyn and check out the rearranged space in the store. We met two very nice ladies who, unfortunately, were just in the process of closing up at 2:00 PM, so we didn't get anything to eat. They've made good use of the space, and we'll definitely...

    Estate Tours

I just wanted to say thanks to Lynn for setting up the tour this morning. It was truly an experience in many different ways. I enjoyed meeting Jerseyman, Yeti (hope I sp'd that right), Largo, Whitingrider, and of course our genial host. The house was nothing short of a history buff's dream: a...

    Southeast of Hampton Forge

Headed out today with my buddy Jack and his dog. After poking our noses up Moores Meadow Rd. a little we headed back to Carranza, went south a bit, and hung a right on Glossy Spung. From there we drove down to Hampton and took a right on High Crossing, heading down toward the bridge near where I...

    Eclipse

I don't know about you guys, but we got really lucky up here. Skies cleared off about an hour ago, and we have a great view. About 4/5 of the way to totality now.

The Old Union Church, Long Valley

Permit me to divert your attention northward for a brief moment. The old Union Church sits crumbling into ruin in a bend of Fairview Avenue, a stone's throw from Schooley's Mountain Rd., in Long Valley. Built in 1774, it replaced an earlier structure that legend (and some historical references)...

George Cook Atlas - Sheet 3

I noticed that in the downloadeable maps section of the forum, in the George Cook Atlas, sheets 2 and 3 are the same. Sheet 3 is the one that is in error, as it should cover an area further east... which happens to be an area I'm interested in. Anyone know where I can get the scan of sheet 3...

    Petty at Half-time

I have to say I was impressed. He can still kick it out, and he looked good doing it. Freefallin' was awesome.

Hints of Places Here and There

In "Landscape Narratives: Design Practices for Telling Stories" by Matthew Potteiger, 1998, he mentions "Washington's nineteenth century iron forge" and says it is located "on a paper road, surrounded by a chain-link fence." He distinguishes it from Martha, so I know he means some different...

East Branch of the Wading River

Interesting. The river north of Harrisville is called the Oswego on all the current topos I can find. But on the old Cook map part of it east of Oswego Lake is called the East Branch of the Wading river. What got me thinking of this is a section in "Proceedings of the Academy of Natural...

    Making Bloom Iron

Ran across this while doing some research this afternoon. Interesting description of operating a bloomary by someone who is doing it in the present day in West Va. There are other related pages of interest as well. http://iron.wlu.edu/anvil.htm

And now for something completely ...

... different, but not completely unrelated. You guys will enjoy these pictures and a haunting video of a 100 year-old ghost town slowly sinking into the sand dunes of southern Namibia. http://fogonazos.blogspot.com/2008/01/kolmanskop-ghost-town-buried-in-sand.html
