    Blueberries? Anyone?

Very cool, Scott. Thanks for the tips! Sounds like we need to get back down there.

Old Tractor by Boot Hill Deer Club

Great detective work, Trailhead. I've driven by that thing a few times and marvelled at the rear drivers. I bet that piece of equipment developed some serious torque.

    Bats and a Snake

Pictures from opposite ends of New Jersey today :). While I was up photographing abandoned farms in the Water Gap region my friend Jack was out with his dog in the area of Lower Forge when he spotted this guy: At first he thought it was a rattler, since it "rattled" its tail against the...

    Need some advice!!

Update on the hawk: I received a message from Donna at The Raptor Trust today, letting me know that the bird is well and has been in an outdoor aviary since the 6th. They were not able to find any medical problem, so we don't know why she was standing on the side of the road, or why she allowed...

    Fireworks

We have a good show here in Long Valley every year, but last night the air was so heavy and still that the smoke from the shells just hung there and built into this great, thick cloud, so that all of the fireworks in the last 3/4 of the show were experienced as dim colored flashes in the haze :).

    Blueberries? Anyone?

That's another area I want to explore. Haven't been up in there at all. The dots are structure markings, I believe, but they tend to stay on the maps long after the structures are gone. I would guess those are gun clubs or dwellings.

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Thanks for the link to the background, Guy. What a mess.

Yeah, don't get hooks on the strap. I have a 20,000 lb strap with sewn eyes, and I carry two shackles (D-ring) for hooking up if I need to. These straps, and sometimes even the shackles, _will_ break if stressed. I saw a broken strap lying up at Old Halfway on Friday. Probably the guy doing the...

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Very interesting, James. Thanks! I've never been that far north on Devious Mt. Rd (though I have been by High Crossing three or four times, so I was close). I'll have to check it out on my next trip.

    Blueberries? Anyone?

I'm not sure! Is Devious Mt. the same hump we call Jemima? If not, then no :).

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Brought the girls down for our annual July 4th expedition to the pines. Last year we collected over a quart of blueberries in less than an hour along the roads north of Washington and south of Hawkin Bridge, but damned if we could find any today. We managed maybe a pint of the small wild...

Congrats, James!. Nice ride. You can go anywhere you like in the pines with that, or nearly. I was out with the kids a little East of you for most of the day today, noticed that conditions are quite dry. Mount Rd. was dry. Martha Rd. was dry. Bulltown-Hawkin, Washington-Speedwell...

    Ancient Anchor

Wow, that is really cool. We now have another mystery on our hands. We'll need annotated photos of the individual items with scale references so the quest can begin in earnest. I really thought Ben nailed it on the first couple pieces, but I have no idea what that pile of stuff is.

A ha! Of course. Good eye, man :).

    Need some advice!!

Thanks, dragon. I guess I can understand the policy. They've handled 60,000 raptors at the Trust since the 1980's, and that would mean 60,000 interested members of the public, or something like that.

    Need some advice!!

I'll call them near the end of the day today and see whether they have an update. They seemed very busy yesterday, and I got the impression that they feel the right role for the public is to drop the bird off and leave :). Still, I'm sure they will tell me how she is making out. They were going...

    Another fire near Atsion

I think you nailed the problem, German. From the perspective of the forest the "right" response is one thing. But if I were the politician in charge of keeping people's property safe my instinct would be to slam resources on a fire until it was gone.

    Ancient Anchor

Very cool. I thought I knew a fair bit about old anchors, but I am having a hard time placing some of those shapes into a context that makes sense. Do you know what type it was?
