    Exploring the lower Sleeper

No, no, no, I was a very good distance from both sleepy creek and the sawmill. I was on the Sleeper between the confluence with the mullica and the beaver pond. Jeff

    Exploring the lower Sleeper

Come on now Gabe, it's 2011! They haven't called it the Mechescatauxin in a long time. Yes, that is the approximate location. Have you been there?

    Exploring the lower Sleeper

Sunday I got into the woods to do some exploring around the lower sleeper, upstream from it's confluence with the Mullica. Most of this area is hidden from aerial photography due to a heavy cedar canopy. About 500ft from the nearest road I found this long abandoned hunting "shack"...

Nice report Guy, could the WS be a Sooy? Was this the bass river near route 72 near Penn, or down by absegami?

Washington Twp. cracks down on illegal ATV riders

Possibly, but that road has always been popular with wheelers. I spoke with an old piney once who told me he used to send wheelers down that road in the 70's just so his friend could make some $ pulling them out later LOL. Hopefully it doesn't become the new 1/4 mile. Jeff

    Stargazers Pit

Yes that is right. I actually meant Nature conservancy, not NJCF. I suppose it is probably Haines though.

    Stargazers Pit

the red pit has always been posted. I believe it is Haines or now NJCF. we always called it the red pit because it is filled with red sand like on nearby red road (stephens road)

    Odd

In the 1930's-1940's I think grid ditches were still being used for mosquito control which wouldn't have looked like this.

BTW: if you want to post links to historical aerials here is how I did it. When you are on there click on share, then email and have that photo sent to your email. Then copy the link in your email and paste it in the text of your thread/post. Ben mentioned another way of doing it, but I...

    Stargazers Pit

oh yeah, the pit coming off of sooy going towards spring hill. Yeah, I wouldn't have thought that that would be as good for stargazing as spring hill. there used to be alot more jumps and things in that pit but then then they flattened it with a bulldozer a few years back. The north end still...

    Odd

What's a mullica boy doing poking around Forked River?!!!! Okay, that is odd and a cool find. That bog is, of course, not of the typical cranberry growning variety as it is certainly filled with brackish water from barnegat bay. So, my thought was that it was somehow related to the harvesting...

    Stargazers Pit

It sounds like you were at spring hill, which is a very beautiful spot for vistas. I have never heard it referred to as stargazers pit, but it is a good spot for that. There is another pit in that area to the east, the red pit, but it is just a pit without the hill. Jeff

I'm glad to here that Jess is feeling better. That first photo of the cellar hole with the garbage in it....I think I know where that is. Is it on the north side of 532, west of the lake? Kind of near the blue water sand pit? Jeff

    Brookville's Oyster--A PBX Trip

Very nice, gentlemen. I am sorry I missed this one. I love dramatic changes in the topography as you encountered here. I've hiked some of the trails in there and noticed, like Chris, that it felt like forests to the north. Jeff
