    High Crossing

Saturday, 15 Aug 2015, Ro and I were wandering the Pines and going down Carranza Road saw the new gravel on Tuckerton Road leading to High Crossing. Having never been down that way (value our SUV too much), we drove in. Saw that a LOT of road work had been done, especially at High Crossing...

    Munyon Field

Wilmer Stone mentions on page 66 of his 1910 report to the New Jersey State Museum that Mr. C. F. Saunders reports a trip through the Pines of 1899 in which they passed Munyon Field. I'd always thought Munyon Field was named for the airport now located there. Realized on reading Saunder's...

    Earthstar mushroom - Geastrum triplex

This is such a little gem I had to post a picture of it, Ro and I ran across it while checking out botanical survey sites on Franklin Parker. Read about it in Boyd's " A Field Guide to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey" page 79. I'd never seen it in this stage before; it's very easy to overlook...

    Whitesbog Tundra Swans

Ro & I were at Whitesbog late this afternoon, got Patty Rehn to come join us - we saw 100+ Tundra Swans on a lower reservoir and 40+ more at the northern shore of the big upper reservoir. Most I've ever seen there.

    Mute Swans

Ro and I toured Franklin Parker Preserve this afternoon to get botanical data and saw groups of Tundra Swans of 4 and 10 individuals on Eagle Reservoir, 4 more on a reservoir just to the north and 4 more on an old bog in the Jakes Spung area. At the bogs east of Presidential Lakes we saw a big...

    Stone locations

When you guys locate a stone, evidently you take a GPS reading. Curiosity rules me: how close are the stones to recorded locations - i.e., how accurate were the old surveys? I guess this raises the questions of what reference point was originally used vs today's reference, did the stone move...

    Strange Stone

Yesterday, while we were walking in Greenwood Forest WMA, so Ro could photograph a Buck Moth (saw lots, pictured none) we ran across a strange stone in the middle of a main sand trail. Pictured below, it was the only stone of this size anywhere around, was of a different material, bore no...

    Bumblebee mutant

Since we live on the fringe if not inside the Pine Barrens, thought this oughta be recorded. Ro photographed a bumblebee on Lantana in our backyard. Doug Yanega, U of Cal/Riverside entomology prof and bee expert and Ken Shields, another college entomology prof, confirmed identification. Pix...

    Burrs Mill

Since we're now living quite close, we use/cross Burrs Mill Road often. Recently we walked a bit of the little Burrs Mill run paralleling Rte 70 and the questions arose: where was Burrs Mill? What is the history of Burrs Mill? When did Burrs Mill disappear? Is it named for a member of the...
