Yes, sir. I think the same thing happened along the south-west side of the nearby Hammonton Creek.

    Lidar addiction

Bob, These are questions for Spung-Man, but, if you will, allow me to speculate: The dunes in question were probably re-worked by the paleo river whose wide drainage is now occupied by the Nescochague, Mechescatauxin and Atsion branches. The water reoriented the dunes to where the align with...

Mulliner the Mariner: The Man Beyond the Myth

Thanks, Al. Those trenches remain a mystery. I was poking around the area a few weeks ago and I noticed that it is only the dunes/islands near the 1808 road that have them, so my best guess is that they were borrowing sand in order to build up the road through the swamp.

    Jersey Devil Alternate Origin

Bill, Halpert 's documentation does not mention Estellville as the birthplace of the devil. Neither is Leeds Point mentioned, for that matter. Well's Mill and Calico are mentioned, however.

    Jersey Devil Alternate Origin

This is the often repeated claim I was speaking of. Unfortunately, my Algonquian leaves much to be desired. Jerseyman, can you speak to the veracity of this claim?

    Jersey Devil Alternate Origin

I can neither confirm nor deny this claim, but I've not been able to trace the claim to any reputable source. What would a "dragon" be to the Lenape Indians, anyway?

    The Pines of My Past

That last song was inspired by a story that folklorist Herbert Halpert recorded in 1941. It is essentially a variation of the old Will-o-the-Wisp/Jack-o-the-Lantern legends: "Old Jimmy Wells who built Wells' Mill -- they say he was so queer he wouldn't have anything to do with no one hardly. He...

Geologist Blends Science and Folklore of the Jersey Devil

“Yes, you can see what people think are mine shafts filled with water, but these are pits made from quickly melting permafrost.” The same types of holes or pits are being found in Siberia today as permafrost melts due to global warming, he said. Could gas explosions have formed our blue holes...

Peter Bard's mill (probably a saw mill) is mentioned in a 1722 will (Calendar of New Jersey Wills, Vol. 1).

    Mullica Put-in Options

Gonna be a lot longer than 45 minutes from Constable Bridge to Crowley's Landing. If you plan to stop here and there and poke around a bit, count on a 3 hour trip.
