    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Here's something in my notes about Higbee's Green Tree Tavern, again without a source! I know, I know... "Higbee's Tavern (aka Green Tree Tavern) was located at Moss Mill Rd. and Rt. 9. Built in 1776 by John Steelman." Now I'm cornfused.

Some more relevant information: "Deed (1824) from Gibson Ashcraft to Nicholas Sooy Thompson, property boundary at School House Run." (W.L. Vol. 15, p. 202) I also have in my notes (although I somehow forgot to name the source. doh!) that Nicholas Sooy Thompston applied for tavern...

SpungMan, I believe that Negro Creek got its name from David Mapps, who owned land along the stream.

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Terry, The description of the road to Newtown suggests that it was a place name, and not a surname. This is all "new" to me, so I don't know quite where it was, although I share SpungMan's hunch that it was located about here...

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

My hunch that "Pettit's Old Road" was an older name for Sailor Boy Road doesn't quite make sense to me anymore, unless Newtown was nowhere near Newton Creek. Hmm....

Ironmaster Samuel P. Richards Original 1826 Sign from Atsion Mansion

Glafman, the sign you bought could very well bear the name of Jesse Richards' son Samuel. You might not want to accept this possibility, but who really knows? I hope it turns out that it is indeed the sign of Samuel Richards of Atsion fame.

As for Cook's Field, it doesn't seem likely that Batsto mined sand from there for the glass factory, does it?

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

The Beers 1872 map locates Lucas Meadows on Sailor Boy Rd. I'm guessing that these "meadows" were formerly cedar swamp (they have reverted back to cedar swamp since the map was made) that Christopher Lucas logged sometime in the 18th century. I'm guessing that the logged swamp was then called...

Thank you, SpungMan and Jerseyman! I need to pour over the 1872 Beers map.

Pardon all of my questions! One more. Does anyone know where exactly Beck's and Vanmeter's place was? Spungman? Jerseyman?

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Jerseyman, I was wondering if you could help me locate Newtown. From my notes: Road to Newtown from Indian Cabin Road via. Cook's field. Sand gotten from Cook's Field for glass factory at Batsto. (Wharton Ledgers, Vol. 9, p. 46) Also: “Pettit's Old Road” also called Newtown Road in...

Jerseyman, what was the name of the road depicted on Gordon's map which runs from Sailor Boy Inn up north past West's Mills?

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

So the Sailor Boy Inn was located at the junction of Moss Mill Rd and Sailor Boy Rd. Makes sense!

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Thanks, Jerseyman!! I had forgotten that Indian Cabin Mill is depicted on Watson's 1812 map! You have confirmed by suspicions. Any clue as to where exactly THE Indian Cabin was? And have we any evidence of a tavern closer to the mill (Sailor Boy Tavern is too far from Indian Cabin Mill for...

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Terry! Higbee's Tree Tavern seems to have been at the junction of Moss Mill Rd and Old Egg Harbor Rd: http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.58779452941733&lng=-74.7209960964584&z=17&type=nj1930&gpx= Sailor Boy was not at Nesco. The one at Nesco was called the New Columbia Tavern, I believe...

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

So I'm thinking that perhaps "Indian Cabin Mill" was at the foot of Egg Harbor City Lake. Could there have been a tavern there as well?

    Tavern in Pleasant Mills, NJ

Neither did I know that it was a toponym. That said, I haven't found an actual map that depicts it. I would assume that the actual cabin was somewhere near the junction of Indian Cabin Stream and Indian Cabin Rd. What makes matters a bit confusing is the fact that "Indian Cabin Mill Inn" was...
