    It starting...

I lived there briefly in 2006. About 8 months or so. Enough time to get in some really memorable paddles and hikes.

    Martha furnace question

While Budd Wilson and gang were excavating the furnace (in the late 60's, I believe), some SOBs would come back there after hours and actually dismantle the furnace and steal the bricks. They decided the best way to protect the site would be to bury what remained. Unfortunate, but necessary.

Boyd's Map of the Pines beta available

Boyd, Is there any way to turn off the labels so that only the LIDAR image is seen (and not the roads, waterways, names, etc.)?

    Wading River Canoeing

I've wondered about the boat also. Has been there as long as I can remember. The dam was, as you guessed, constructed to divert water via the canal to Harrisville Pond in order to increase the amount of water flowing through through the mills there. Nice pictures, btw.

    Batsto Lime Kiln

They found lots of shells and limestone. :) The former, by and large, represents the earlier stages of the kiln (pre-19th century).

    Batsto Lime Kiln

Budd Wilson told me that he helped excavate the kiln sometime after 1965. They filled it in afterward, but he says some of the foundation may be visible. It is located about where the road to the old nature center leaves the Washington Turnpike.
