    Salt hay burning?

Now that I'm thinking more about it, I'm wondering if they were dug out for mosquito control.

    Salt hay burning?

I don't rightly know, but I've always thought they were dug out as short-cuts for boats. How exactly they dug it out back then, I don't know.

    Sasquatch in the Pines

I'm thinking of Rt. 552, but I now see that this particular stretch wasn't constructed until relatively recently. The mound is probably from roadway construction, I'd guess.

    Sasquatch in the Pines

Al, There is a mound next to Manumuskin Creek immediately upstream from Mill-May Rd. It was visible from the road as I drove by today. Do you happen to know what it is?

    The NEW Beer Thread

I recall BCB. They went out of business shortly after I turned 21, so I don't recall how it tasted. I remember I like it, though. Say, Spung-Man, I still await your response to the "salt hay burning?" thread.... ;)

Whoa! Very neat, Spung-Man. Is that then what we are looking at along the Mullica? Charred marsh?

    Sasquatch in the Pines

Here's a little something Cook wrote in the 1876 Annual Report of the State Geologist:

Actually, I'm thinking that the stream was called Governor's Stream before the pond was called Governor's Pond.

    Sasquatch in the Pines

I don't doubt it. But take a look at the 1931 aerial and note that the pond seems to be the result of the stream getting backed up by a road/causeway.

Just thinking out loud here... I was wondering if Governor's Pond was named in honor of Jeremiah Basse, one of the early governors. Bass River is named after him (so I understand), so maybe this pond as well?

Are we certain that Governor's Pond is natural?
