Charles Read: Part 4 – Exile

Well done, Roosay. The Read was interesting.

Hello - journalist looking for your craziest (or just best) Pine Barrens stories here!

I just saw this. Is it too late to share my pines/ghosts/beers story? Kidding. I look forward to your article.

    Lock's Bridge

I was able to get out to the Locks today for a leisurely paddle. It was gorgeous out there. Found no evidence of a forge, but the pine flies, mosquitoes and brush weren't exactly conducive to exploration. I did find furnace slag in the causeway, which I'm guessing was brought from the site of...

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

Great discussion, gentleman. Say, Guy, where the heck was I when you guys found the ore pit?? I would have loved to have seen that.

    Lock's Bridge

Thanks, Jerseyman. I agree that a sawmill makes most sense at the locks location. I wonder if Samual Richards did in fact build a forge there at a later time, as Pierce asserts. Some prodding around the area should yield some clues.

Springtime On The Tulpehocken, A PBX Hike

This was a memorable hike. Those bogs were simply stunning. Guy and Bob really came up with a good one, as usual. These two gentleman put alot of thought into these hikes, and for that I'm grateful. It's great to be able to get out into the woods with a group like this where everyone has...

    Lock's Bridge

Are we certain that John Estell dammed the Atsion River at Locks Bridge, and not at Atsion? According to Pierce (Iron in the Pines, p. 31), Read bought Estell's right to dam the Atsion River at Atsion. Estell did dam the Sleepy Creek and built a saw mill there (perhaps at an alternative...

    Lock's Bridge

Jerseyman, Thanks for providing that invaluable legislation! Many questions have been answered, and many more arise. I wonder who operated this "Shingle Landing" and where it was exactly. And why was it referred to as "Fast Landing"? I just read that the word "fast" was once used in a nautical...

    Lock's Bridge

Very interesting alternatives to consider, Spungman. Concerning the loch theory, I'm not seeing any elongated spungs (wet or dry) around there which could have been designated as "lochs". I suppose that some of those braided channels to the west of the Atsyunk could have reminded early Scottish...

    Lock's Bridge

I really have to find that old reference to the lock(s). Until then, I can only defer to Drinker's letter. Say Spungman, I'm a bit confused as to where these lochs-of-the-swamp were. Can you show us on a map precisely where these ponds were? Thanks in advance.

    Lock's Bridge

Well, this is where Pearce presumably got his info on the locks from: Although Pierce does not explicitly claim that Samuel Richards built the locks...

    Lock's Bridge

Guy, was locks bridge destroyed by arson, or did the State purposely destroy it?

    Lock's Bridge

Incidentally, historic aerials show that the locks bridge was built sometime between 1957 and 1963. I'm guessing the State built it?

I know you can get the USGS topomaps at the Atsion station, and I imagine the same is true at Batsto.

    Lock's Bridge

Doh! Here is a post I made some time ago on the subject. I guess I never did find that reference to Read's construction of the locks. Ben, did you come across anything in your recent studies on Read?
