    Marilyn Schmidt

Sad news. If she did nothing more than rescue Buzbys from oblivion she would have earned her place in Pine Barrens history but she did so much more. I'll always treasure our chats and the large part of my library that came from her shop.

    Pinelands Commission Meeting Video

Bob, I've even heard second hand from some of the people partying back there that it was ok to leave their trash behind, because "they" (meaning us) come back every year and clean it up. Makes you feel so good about making the effort, doesn't it?

This has been my experience as well.

What makes these tracks in the frozen lake?

I grew up in Passaic County and did quite a bit of ice fishing from there west to Sussex County. We never especially worried about the ice, other than paying close attention to its thickness. How thick it needed to be to walk, drive a snowmobile or drive a truck on was fairly common knowledge...

    Paper Wasps

30 years and 40 pounds ago when I still did tree work a buddy was making his way up the tree to the tie-in point when the little SOBs came pouring out of a tree cavity. He did his best to fend them off while holding on but ended up falling about ten feet and broke a few ribs landing on a lower...

Ancient graves of Sayers & Ludlams

I attended a vocational-technical high school, taking four years of mechanical drawing as my "shop". I went on in another direction after entering college but still have my 40-some year old Vemco drafting machine and other assorted equipment. I break it out once in a blue moon to draw plans for...

    The end of Garmin Basecamp

I've been following all of this, attempting to see how it might affect the GPS purchase I've been considering as a more weather resistant alternative to my phone. I've been fairly GPS-illiterate up to this point, getting by as much as I can with a paper copy of a topo map in my pocket and the...

    Berry I.D.

My guess is Blackhaw. The berries of bayberry aren't in terminal clusters, but rather grow along the stems, closer than the leaves. They are also grayish-white rather than pink. Bayberry isn't likely to be found in that wet of a site either.

    Bill to allow prescribed burns

They won't even have to take the blame. There are thousands of Monday morning quarterbacks who will gladly assign it to them. They'd be nuts to attempt what the pines really need. But there is a plan B. Mechanical thinning, such as what has been done on the Haines property in Chatsworth. It...

I think we should ban mothballs too!

    Piping Plovers vs People

I have that issue on my coffee table and haven't even read the article, out of consideration for my blood pressure. Self-centered attitudes aside, the plover's evolved nesting strategy places it in possibly the worst location in the most densely populated state in the nation. I guess the truck...

    A first, tsunami weather alert

Good thing my Muck Boots are 1 1/2 ft high! I may even have a survival kit somewhere left over from Y2K :)

    Disappearing Orchids

I've observed Lady Slipper in greater numbers in the years immediately following a burn. Turkey Beard behaves similarly. Perhaps the vegetation where a decline is noticed is getting too dense.

Osprey nest on GSP sign post?

There was an osprey sitting on a small amount of nesting material on the sign today, but it was on the tip of the stantion, which isn't right over a travel lane. I think anything falling from the nest will land on the guardrail or edge of the shoulder. I don't see it posing a hazard to anyone...

    Sycamore Plantings

Is there another tree growing on the backside? I see red cedar foliage but not cedar bark on the trunk. The trunk brings a silver maple to mind. edit: Looking again, I think I do see maple leaves at the left side of the photo. If they are from the bigger tree, it'd say it's a silver maple.

    Lawn mowers

It so happens I'm going to my local shop for a mower today. I've gone through quite a few in my 30 years at this house, some cheap and some pricey. The only one that lasted as long as I liked was my Honda, which I just gave to my son. The only thing wrong was a deck that started rusting through...

    Squirrel eating pizza

I've always been pleased that slinkys are still made in the US, but my kids are grown and I have nobody to buy one for. Until now, that is! Thanks for the idea! :)

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

Just to expand on my comments you took issues with: By "uninformed" I was referring to the fact many critics of the project merely see pretty trees and may not be aware that most are of a species not native to the area and were selected as a more valuable timber species than the native pines...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

This is just another case of good intentioned people not being able to see the forest for the trees. The same uninformed, short-sighted noise was was made when they cut the trees surrounding the tower at Brendan Byrne years ago. The issue is now largely forgotten and the site is nicely forested...
