Harrisville Lake tree removal and grading

That's the only logical explanation. For those familiar with the location on the Northern part of 679 where you launch your boats past the initial spillway all the way to the southern dam and then slightly past it is completely clear cut, graded. Its all gone. So..............I would have to...

Harrisville Lake tree removal and grading

I was curious to see the "after" at Harrisville Pond. It is clear cut from the canoe launch south to the main dam and just beyond. I certainly can understand if tree roots in the immediate area were a concern in possibly damaging the two exit points but so puzzling as to why they removed all of...

    RAIN?

20-30 minute storm. 5:10 to 5:40. Became ominously dark but reality was much less than appearance. Moderate 20-30 mph wind gusts and a very steady and somewhat intense rain but nothing rose to the level of severe storm. No hail, no high winds. Just a nice watering for my freshly cut lawn...

    Closing West Mill Road

Not my cup of tea or whatever but some folks like this type of gathering: http://www.beardfest.net/

    Closing West Mill Road

I will be interested in finding out the facts on this one. He closed that road for Beardfest (caution tape and a cheap wooden sign) a few weeks ago and then reopened it after Beardfest. It's possible the gate may be just for closing during festivals. I'm sure we will all know one way or another...

    First time campers?

Batona is a nice campground and provides a true pinelands experience. A downside is that it is somewhat remote and if you need to leave to get something its a bit of a drive to the nearest location. You may want to consider Atsion Family campground at Atsion Lake. Across the lake is the Atsion...

    Dumping in Bass River

Outstanding! Thank you for volunteering today! I am seeing real progress in some areas where we have removed dumped material and then secured the area from future similar acts (on preserves and private property, not state forest).

    Pine Barren Flora

Yeah, a tricky business this helping turtles can be. Certainly don't want to injure yourself. Perhaps with a much lighter snapping turtle, the rear shell plate or drag method could be used. Last turtle I helped was a diamondback terrapin in strathmere...it repaid me by dropping five ticks on me...

    Pine Barren Flora

I found this video on how to pick up a Snapping Turtle to be pretty helpful. Best place is back of turtle (NOT tail)....I realize with the heaviest of turtles it could be problematic so the "slide" methodology is second best. 3;20 video -

Alternative use for abandoned sand mine quarries :)

Rooftop solar is still fairly inefficient but once you goto large scale projects like this it can become quite cost effective. I could see a company leasing a quarry pond for 25 years :) Better than building on open space (although former capped landfills are ok)...

Climate change indicators in the Pine Barrens

Most unfortunate. I hope the NJPC and/or Rutgers Marine is monitoring this salt water intrusion!

    They Gonna Gitcha !

The hundreds of anti-Police comments that followed on their Facebook page was very disappointing. As the WTPD says "Either you are part of the problem or you are part of the solution". Glad to see F&W and WTPD working together for all the families and individuals who want to enjoy this WMA in a...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Regarding prevention I have significantly cut back on any off trail or even narrow trail hikes when Ticks are active. To the best of my knowledge....ticks cannot fly.....they cannot jump. So based on that I try to limit or eliminate any place where they can crawl on me from grass (especially)...

    You Decide

Not sure of your question, but my reading/interpretation is that they (PA) are unable to rent canoes/kayaks for folks who wish to go onto the lake. As another poster commented they do however appear to be able to rent to folks who are staying at the adjacent campgrounds or cabins. Conversely I...

    You Decide

I am hoping that full details are made public. The State and Pinelands Adventures should be given an opportunity as well to address specific claims and statements against them. On its surface I am fully in support of Cowboy Mike's Canoe Rental service. Having stated that I would like to know...

"Free" over the air delivered television signals to be upgraded over next 2-3 years

This is an encouraging new additional service (IP based, HDR and 4k stream) especially for those folks who live in remote areas where Comcast/Verizon etc are not available or for those who do not wish to pay for a cable bill. Does not appear to require a new TV rather a converter $25-50, to...

"Free" over the air delivered television signals to be upgraded over next 2-3 years

Your current television will need a converter to accept the new transmission starting 2018 to 2020. HDR, and 4k will be transmitted as well. Some pay as you go features eventually available...
