    Tar Kiln Locations?

Many kilns are on the edges of swamps. They would build it on a hillside to help with the flow and put the barrel hole on the down hill side. Also I assume they would dig their clay for the kiln out of the swamp since many swamps have a clay layer under the muck. One kiln I found was near a spring...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

Many kilns are near roads and if at first they don't appear to be near a road check the old maps or look at the ground nearby carefully and you will probably find evidence of a road nearby.I doubt that tar was light enough to lug around in a bucket. They had to be able to get horses and a wagon...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

the ones down here usually don't have a visible hole in the center.Mostly a donut ring about 2 ft high surrounding a level or very slightly depressed spot but the trench and bucket hole outside the ring at end of trench are dead giveaways.

    Tar Kiln Locations?

yes tar kiln and if you dig down through the charcoal which should be about a foot thick you will come upon a clay layer.I have found different kilns with different color clay beds, pink, white and grey so far.I have never dug through the clay to see how thick they lay that layer?

    Tar Kiln Locations?

Looks like one at first glance but if you scrutinize the left side it's bent in on itself, not quite round. It's definitely man made,I don't think it's Laurel but it may be a hole.Heck your there,go check it out!

    Tar Kiln Locations?

I"ve camped in Francis Marion and poked into Wambaw swamp and Hellhole bay a bit.No time for serious bushwacking and I was alone,I didn't care about that back then but am seriously starting to watch myself now.One eye and a bad knee makes bushwacking a much more serious business:-(

    Tar Kiln Locations?

I thought maybe the waxiness of the leaves was fooling the LIDAR into mistaking it for solid ground but yes I have been "gotten" several times by kiln sized patches of the stuff.

    Tar Kiln Locations?

The only one i would say might be a kiln would be bottom left but I think it's a test pit because of the shadow in it showing it's a hole.Tar kilns are a donut rim of dirt sitting on basically level ground ,not really a hole to be throwing shadows.I also see no trench of course the trench...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

I thought you meant the tarkiln Brook down near Head of the River on Weatherby Rd.I had to switch to Topo Because the LIDAR was an unrecognizable area to me.I then seen why.Thats all the way up near the Metedeconk! I hearby name ot the "Yankee Tarkiln"! Of course being the finder the naming is...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

so were the ones that I mistook for kilns and were laurel.Around here you will have open woods with kiln size patches of laurel in them.Deer often drop their fawns in them. They have foold me several times as kilns. Now a few of those you show are definitely kilns.Classic donut with a trench...
