    Henry Charlton Beck

Beck is great, I never tire of his books and read them over and over again. Just last week, I had an appointment for some regularly-scheduled car maintenance and brought one of his books along to read in the waiting room. Car was ready sooner than they promised and I was a bit disappointed not...

Realistic scenes in the terrain viewer (with tutorial)

For a change, you could switch to 10-color mode and 2d view. This link is higher resolution and uses extreme lighting angles to bring out detail instead of vertical exaggeration. (Looks kind of like a big foot to me :D )...

Realistic scenes in the terrain viewer (with tutorial)

I make no claims of any practical use for this technique whatsoever. It's just something fun to do (for me, at least). It uses the USGS/NAIP aerials from the National Map which are only 8 foot (level 16) resolution and were also taken during the summer, so tree canopy hides details. Really, it's...

    Snow?

This is interesting.... could be up to 36% probability of over 12 inches of snow in some parts of the Pines and 63% probability of 4 inches all over South Jersey next Friday. :siren:

    Snow?

More weather coming, looks like rain (and wind) for me . But then it gets cold again next week with highs only up around freezing. https://www.weather.gov/media/phi/current_briefing.pdf

Realistic scenes in the terrain viewer (with tutorial)

Figured I should wind this up with a Pines Barrens location instead of a distant mountain. Let's start at Hampton Gate https://boydsmaps.com/#16.00/39.801439/-74.677717/legacy24k/0.00/0.00 And again, check the quality of the NAIP imagery because it's not great in some places. But this looks...

    Snow?

This winter feels pretty typical to me, the only unusual thing was the very warm fall. Good thing it finally got cold, because I sure wasn't spending time inside making maps on those nice days. :D This time, I got around 6 or 7 inches, it was really coming down hard for awhile. But it was...

Realistic scenes in the terrain viewer (with tutorial)

Now the brief tutorial. Of course, you can open the viewer with one click and just use the defaults. But tweaking the settings produces more realistic results. I really just chose this location at random, but it shows the basic principles. We'll start with the NAIP imagery, since that's what the...

Realistic scenes in the terrain viewer (with tutorial)

Have been wanting to do this for awhile, finally getting around to it. :) It's possible to create some fairly realistic scenes using aerial imagery in the terrain viewer, but it takes some understanding of how light reveals three-dimensional objects to get the best results. See the next post...

    Introducing the new 1970's aerials

Here's something I find interesting. Interstate 295 was still under construction in 1970, you can see that it only goes as far North as Route 38, although it's not quite clear how much of the Southern section is actually open. If you follow the intended Route north, doesn't look like they have...

    Introducing the new 1970's aerials

After about three months of starts and stops, the 1970's aerials are finally available! You should see them on the menu between the 1980's and 1930's aerials, here's a link to try. https://boydsmaps.com/#17.00/39.750392/-74.584688/pines1970/0.00/0.00 If that link doesn't work, or if you have...

    Terrain viewer update coming

Thanks for reminding me, had kind of forgotten this in the flurry of creating all the new aerials! Was going to wait a little longer to roll this out, but noticed I had already put some of the "hooks" for the new map sizes into the main boydsmaps app. Of course, those just crashed the old...

    Snow?

Just finished breakfast at home. Went to take out the trash last night and almost fell on my butt when I stepped off the porch, there was a thin layer of ice and water on everything at that time. I'll just wait and let the ice melt by itself as the temperature goes up to the mid 40's later today. :)

    boydsmaps in the post-NJGIN era

No, didn't do anything special. The Southern part is the same as before, the Northern part was downloaded the same way. I am using .jpg files for all of these, the files are much smalller than .png and it's very hard to tell any difference in quality with aerials. I might add some of the other...

    boydsmaps in the post-NJGIN era

The update is finally online! This is quite major with many code and map changes, so see my earlier post about clearing your browser cache if you have problems. New 2015, 2019 and 2020 aerials with full New Jersey coverage are now online, joining the 2007 and 2012 aerials that were updated...

So much for that plan! :D Just finished the 2019 download, it will take 20 hours or more to process. The 2015 aerials are finishing up but won't be done until late tonight. Hope I can put everything online tomorrow, but it depends on whether the 2019 files are finished.
