    Bamber Lake

You know what else sucks? Going to a concert and reeking like sweaty people. And the annoyance of drunk people in a bar. And can you imagine how much disease must be passing around in places like that--I didn't make the choice to breathe germs in, either. Hopefully the law-making...

Bald eagle making its way off endangered list

its nice to see that being added to the endangered list isn't a guaranteed precursor to extinction (like its been with oh i dunno . . . every other species ever . . ), but where DDT failed habitat loss will follow through. Bald eagles were an easy species . . . isolate the toxin (or toxins)...

    Ruffed Grouse

I haven't ever, but I'm still pretty new to the birding game.

    Pileated Woodpecker

Too true! The first time i can remember hearing one was last summer (though at the time i didn't know what it was). I was descending mount tammany at a time of year when the forest looks more like a rainforest . . . huge ferns are the only undergrowth an open forest floor with huge trees and a...

    Pileated Woodpecker

Also Brandon, I dunno whether or not you read my trip report, but look for these: These huge rectangular/oval holes they cut into trees seem to be very characteristic of this species of woodpecker only. The holes are a good size--hard to believe anything else would be capable of...

    Pileated Woodpecker

Were you at the Great Swamp NWR? I was there friday looking for them . . . incidentally first I saw was last week, too--at the Water Gap. -Bob

    Pileated Woodpecker

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

I'd definatly be interested in this hike if it actually happens. I've had intentions to get to manumuskin for a few years now but it never seem to get there. Also, Al--if i recall correctly we had intentions of herping a while back--we should do that this year. -Bob

    salamanders

To the best of my recollection there are no NJ salamanders that fit that description. Redbacks are all black or black with a red stripe down the back . . . . that's the only thing close, though.

Up the Middle, Down the South, a PBX hike

It was an excellent day--a tough hike, I learned some things, b.s.ed with some good guys, and in the end I came out of it (relatively) dry and not bleeding. Who could ask for more than that?

    salamanders

I'm definatly no expert, but I might be able to help. Dave-- I'm not familiar with the area you're talking about, but your question depends alot on what species you're looking for. The salamanders you found in North jersey were probably redback salamanders which--as has been previously...

    Dodged a bullet last night....

i'm not sure about the bigger ones (since i've never seen one that large), but back in the day i tried to chop a few of those to make walking staves out of, and the insides are always soft and chewy. I don't think ailanthus trees ever have a solid core.

    Turtles in January

Its getting easier to tell the difference isn't it? My new camera is a Canon Powershot S2IS. Hopefully I'll come across enough things to eventually be able to replace everything with crisp pictures from this camera. -Bob

    Turtles in January

Yeah . . . a few years ago i might have thought it weird. But I've noticed herp activity at unusual times alot since i started actually paying attention. I few years back my friend and I were walking on the ice at one of our local cranberry bogs and noticed a painted turtle . . . crusing...

    This weather...

Hey don't forget this happened last winter too. Look: This (terribly flattering) picture was taken January 3rd, 2005. It was 65 degrees in a stretch of warm days significant enough to bring out the amphibians. That green frog was out of hibernation and active when i caught it two...

    The Timber aka "Pine" Rattlesnake

I agree with Guy. You can never be too careful. I've seen a population of spotted turtles vanish in a season for that very reason. Common animals are one thing, but endangered and localized things like that . . . its just too risky. -Bob

    bog turtles

aah. "late summer". I missed that. Well it would be about hatching season at the very least . . .
