Bill got a new recorder for his birthday. It is the size of a cell phone and does better then his old recorder that had to be backpacked in.He missed frog season this year but He's right in insect season now with still a few frogs still hanging on.Plus he's been getting hit and miss treasures...

Venomous Snakes, Bugs, and S&H Green Stamps

My Caterpillar field guide says Puss caterpillars come as far north as Maryland but that i a Puss caterpillar. There are several caterpillars similar but none that are a match to that pic but the Puss. I"ve been stung by IO caterpillars down in Florida and it was one of the most painful things...

    Pine Barren Flora

I think I"m right on the Wild lettuce.Fireweed leaves appear to be unserrated and narrower, also it should be in bloom now.

German I must say on the Paulonia I think your right.leaf shape and texture isn't right for burdock and as i said below catalpa being a tree starts with one woody stem and the leaf is also different and unserrated.

http://aporee.org/maps/?loc=33312&m=satellite This is the site where Whip posts recordings that he deems internet worthy.Every Barrens and Cumberland County recording is by Him. Most are right down fabulous. It's hard to get away from road noise, even in the middle of Wharton it seeps in sometimes.

I think you may right.I would have never suspected a baby catalpa in the barrens but they do grow around people places. That could very well be fireweed too but wild lettuce does look similar. On the burdock I looked for burs and saw none but the stems don't look tree like.Usually trees atrt out...

PS when I told Him to sue Him He hadn't admitted to me that He smarted off to the cop. I said if you'd of talked to him in a respectful manner you wouldn't have got slapped around.I"d of considered it a good joke if it was me long as they didn't rough me up/Then again I wouldn't have smart...

I"ve eaten Wood Nettle and it was good. The Prickly Pear fruit is a delicacy if you can skin it right to avoid the spines. Thing with poke is you have to catch it early like you said.Once it gets any red in the stem it's no good. You can blanche the plant by planting roots in soil and placing them...

I get Ivy bad.I just wonder how many times it's been sumac and I thought it was ivy? It's the same poison in both plants so the symptoms would be the same.I know sumac is supposedly a swamp plant and i spend a lot of time in swamps. Is it a Barrens plant? Or does it prefer less acidic soil?

    Downeast Maine

I"d invest in some good paper maps.A road Atlas or Maine road map ,maybe a Gazetteer, their better then a road atlas and not quite as good as a topo map. Cell service is non existent except near or in towns. Bears are really over rated as a danger.I"ve walked up on numerous bears and every one...

I knew the winged sumac and figured out the other must be poison.I have only seen it once and that was in Burlington near the delaware river.have never seen it in the Pines or perhaps just didn't know what it was when i did.I"m going to have to learn it because Poison ivy does a number on me but...
