The Plains the way they used to be...

Reminds me of one of my slightly stranger PB misadventures. I came across a feller deep in the woods whose VW fastback had bogged down in the sand and I tried to help him try to dig it out, but it was in too deep, and maybe he didn't really want it out. Anyway, it was still there a few months...

To me the only menace that I found in the Barrens was TICKS. Those woods are teeming with them. How do you guys deal with that?

You're welcome! It's very well written and it's what first brought the Barrens to my attention. I had never heard of it before. And the Plains is still the most intriguing part of the Barrens for me. Big sky all around. You can't believe you're in New Jersey! I have these old photos of me...

Oh no! Kickstands are just extra useless weight. You can always lean your bike up against something, or even prop the pedals on a curb. I just don't want the big kids to make fun of you guys. Hardly anyone in the Tour de France uses kickstands. :D

Or you could carry it in a small backpack.

Ha ha. I was thinking about an attached balloon that rubs against the spokes so it will sound like a real motorcycle, and maybe a banana seat (but they must be collectors items by now)!

Interesting, on NY fire towers, including misconceptions, like my own. I thought that fire towers were no longer used. I remember climbing one in the Catskills way back in the 1960's and chatting with the friendly tower man who had majored in forestry in college...

I think that John McPhee's book is great, but my original introduction to the Pine Barrens came by way of a fascinating NY Times travel article back in the 1960's, about those "windswept pines". That's what first got me to go down there and explore the place and fall in love with it. I thought...
