I had heard the DEP did this in the early 80's but I was skeptical. August 4th 1981

That was going to be my question...where would they sleep? I know Bass River has signs and pamphlets warning about black bears, but I have never truly believed there were any around (even though I DO believe in cougars in the pines, oh, my). Being from upstate NY, I could not imagine bears...

Looks like Ole JD made it to Texas...

My mom came from Cuba and I grew up listening to stories of La Chupacabra. I move here to the pines many years ago and it's the Jersey Devil. Feels like home, hehe. Now it seems like La Chupa and Ole JD made hs way to Texas, lol...

Need help picking a handheld GPS

Everyone has their own preference for brands of handhelds. I personally prefer Garmin. Currently I own an Etrex Vista HCx. It has done me well. It is rugged and easy to use. The Vista was a little more expensive (around $300 when I got it) but you will find that there are cheaper versions...

Forked River Mountain / East Mountain

I have an iPhone and use AT&T (it was the only provider that uses iPhones). My reception is great all through Wharton until I get to the Batsto area. I still get reception, but only one-two bars down there. But then again if I move a foot or two I can pick it up better...

    Bats still dying in N.J.

WNS in Europe is definitely there, some say it originated in Europe because they are not dying there as they are here. They coevolved with the disease. An interesting quote about the syndrome from the CDC: And some great sites with info and/or opinions.... http://www.fort.usgs.gov/wns/...

    Bats still dying in N.J.

Never did wetsuit stuff, but would love to give it a shot some day. Always up for a new challenge, lol. I don't have a lot of access to caves and stuff either but there are plenty of places within a couple of hours of here to practice climbing and rappelling. I am predominately a rock...

Vertical access is my thing, hehe! We use a RAD system (grigri, ascender and etrier) and the rappel is great! Up sucks, however..... As a caver, you should probably learn at least RAD, it allows so much more access to places. In the cave below, we found a ledge with a 20 foot drop beyond it...

    Bats still dying in N.J.

Hey Al! That was my first experience caving in WV/KY. I have been dying to head back down and do some more exploration of the Bowden cave system, but haven't had the time lately. I do know that they tried to dynamite a route from the Bowden entrance to the Bear Heaven entrance but never...

    Bats still dying in N.J.

I sent Indy a message and got his reply this morning.... With his permission I am quoting it here... "Hi, Maureen! The disease (or whatever it is) is alive and well and has spread as far as Oklahoma as of earlier this year. :-( Huge jump that can only be attributed to human carriers. And it's...

    Bats still dying in N.J.

Al, as a caver also, we went as far as Kentucky to go caving and were still on the fringe of the WNS a year ago. At this point, you could go into the caves and had to make sure your ropes and gear were "washed". From what I hae been made to understand, the bigest spread is from cross...
