An early winter on the Skit

Nice! I'm also curious about that sign. Btw, I have a friend who likes to take his dogs into the woods. When his last one had aged to the point where he could no longer climb back up into the truck my friend built a ramp that would lie flat in the bed until needed. Dog lovers are the best people :).

    Friendship

I love how he says in the comments now that he was "not aware" this was illegal activity because there were no signs. So I guess we need to plaster the pines with signs and line the roads with guardrails so neanderthal buttwipes like him will know when they are doing something wrong? I think...

I retyped mine several times before I could get it half-civilized.

Amazing Spectacle: Total Lunar Eclipse Monday Night

So your aperture was closed right down. What shutter speed did you use? Must have been a long exposure. How do you shoot ISO 2500 and not get a ton of noise? And same question, I guess, to Boyd: if you're shooting a really fast shutter and are stopped way down, then I assume you're using...

Amazing Spectacle: Total Lunar Eclipse Monday Night

Wow, very nice Pancoast. I got a few through totality as well, but nowhere near that nice. I was shooting at f5.6, 1/200, ISO 200 with a 250mm at full extension. I didn't set up a tripod - was just leaning against the garage - so I kept the shutter speed pretty fast (1/200 to 1/350). Care to...

    Are U a Giants Fan?

True, but we should just go ahead and give NYC that part of the state anyway. The rest of us would see our property values improve by 20% the next day.

    Whitesbog Trust Rentals

Congrats man. I know how unsettling it is to have the domicile question up in the air. You'll have to drive a little further to the woods, but at least, assuming you have the same job, you'll be getting some time back every day.

    Where to buy firewood

Well, my first exposure to the difference between a face and a full cord was like 40 years ago, and I thought it was a common practice at that time.

    Where to buy firewood

There's cords, and there's face cords, is my understanding. A cord is 4' wide, face cord is 2' wide. The stuff they deliver to residences is almost always a face cord. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewood Wiki says that a face cord is 16" deep. Another site said it varies with the cutter. I...

    Facebook Too Big?

Seriously? With all the historical research you do, you don't use the Internet? I have no use for the social networking aspects... but that's my inner misanthrope speaking. Kids growing up today have it embedded into every aspect of their lives, and that will only continue and grow.

    Outdoor Coal/Wood Stove

The stuff I used dried to a hard finish. I guess it was properly called stove paint, not stove black.

    Outdoor Coal/Wood Stove

Yeah, stove black. I used it to refinish the cast-iron galley stove on an old tugboat years ago. Smells, but works :).

    How far north?

Heh, I never thought of pines as ugly. I guess they can be, depending on your perspective. Up here when fall arrives it's the deciduous trees I'm cursing.

    Found at Quaker Bridge

I was thinking something similar, Gabe, just because it was lying next to the stump. However the stump wasn't uprooted, and there was really no significant disturbance of the ground in that area. After thinking about it my best guess is that it was dug up some time ago by someone using a metal...

    Found at Quaker Bridge

I didn't bury it, but it's off the beaten track and won't be found by the average person passing through there. Do you guys think this thing is interesting enough to warrant a call to Batsto? That has been suggested to me, but my initial feeling was that while it was an interesting remainder...

    Found at Quaker Bridge

It never occurred to me that they'd be interested. If anyone wants to retrieve it and take it down there shoot me a PM for the location. I won't be able to get back down for several weeks at least.

    Found at Quaker Bridge

So, yesterday was nearly a complete bust. I should have known better than to think I could actually move from north to south in NJ on Thanksgiving weekend, but I'm an idiot and tried anyway. After spending hours trying to get down the TP I finally made it to Quaker Bridge in the late afternoon...
