    The ATV war continues

This quote is pretty funny. Gee, I hate to teach my kid to break the law, but how else can I get him off the damn X-Box?

    jim ungehajer's illness

Like others here I never met Jim, but enjoyed his posts and exchanged information about road conditions with him on occasion. I'm very sad to hear what he is going through, and mine and my family's best wishes are with him and his.

Still smoldering campfire leads to arson charge

46er, keep track of this, because if they convict those guys of arson I'll drive down and buy you a beer and a bowl of wings at the Pic :).

    Trashing the pines

Maybe if 20-30 4x4s full of guys showed up there during the next vandalism party, and sort of politely suggested that the teens go elsewhere, and stay elsewhere? I'm only half joking. The only thing that has ever kept teen males in line, throughout history, is adult males.

    Trashing the pines

I kind of agree with Boyd that it won't help. I don't necessarily see harm in it, but I don't think it will deter the teenagers that go up there to drink and raise hell. They don't want to participate in your organized activity :). The place will either have to be locked up, patrolled...

Still smoldering campfire leads to arson charge

It's really criminal negligence. I doubt arson will stick. It's a shame that the Pines aren't loaded with something that is really good at extinguishing flames, like sand or water.

    Meet & Greet soon?????

A few folks did the Pic-n-wings thing twice, I think, over the last couple of months. Sort of thing I'd love to get down for, but it's hard for us out of towners with kids and soccer games :).

    Harrisville 35mm scans by Tplife

Last time I was there the fence had been pulled down in a couple of places. Although we didn't clamber around the ruins, I felt fairly confident I wouldn't get arrested for getting closer to take a few pics.

You may have a point there.

The Batona Trail Diary, the First Thirty Miles

That's great stuff, Guy. Good work digging it up. The things that strike me are the apparently easy cooperation between the private group and the government; the lack of long periods of legal review; the amount of letter writing. It was a different world back then, just a year after I was born :).

    Hot summer evening bike ride

I can't believe the Rare Bird Bot failed to pick that one up and submit it. Drats! Back to the drawing board.

    Trashing the pines

I'm a complete cynic with regards to education. The impulse to destroy is at least as strong and as prevalent in humans as the impulse to create (the pessimist in me would say it's much stronger). If you want to keep humans from destroying something important, then imo you have to actively...

Help me ID this device from a barn in PA

I don't think it was even intended to be raised or lowered the "full depth" because there are only 2-3 winds on each side. I think you're right about that being a corn-crib, but I'm at a loss as to what this mechanism might have had to do with it. The axle is perpendicular to the wall of the...

Help me ID this device from a barn in PA

There may have been sawdust at some point, but as I recall the floor now is just packed dirt, grass, straw, etc. This property may have been sporadically occupied and used over the last ten to fifteen years, but it hasn't been permanently occupied, nor has the barn been used for its original...

Help me ID this device from a barn in PA

I was out exploring west of the Delaware yesterday, and visited an abandoned property up in the hills to take photographs of the barns. Inside one of them I found an interesting sort of hoist mechanism, and although I grew up in Indiana and worked around farms and farmers, I haven't yet figured...

    Spiders

Heh, the first time I caught him I released him in the flower beds just past the edge of my deck, and we caught him in the house again within a week. I would still like to know how a 2.5" diameter spider gets into my house without my seeing it! The second time I took him out into the woods...

    Spiders

I found a pretty good-sized spider in my kitchen last year. There was some debate here about whether it was a wolf or a fisher.

    Trashing the pines

Been a long time but I think they were four or five speed with a two-speed transaxle. I do remember that they had a pull-knob throttle on the dashboard, so you could just set the throttle that way and take your foot off the pedal :).
