Are there More Incised Society Stones?

I had dangerously drug Al out to a bay-side marsh island late last night (hoping to hear & record some owl action, with no luck) and he related this particular stone adventure to me. Boy, Gentlemen! With reading the accounts here and hearing Al's, it's obviously certain it requires plenty...

Thank you, g. I have an edited down (3.5 of 20 minutes) wav converted to mp3 of an audio recording I made while taking this photo (the gear was set up just to the left ...) that I'd like to make available. This sorta goes back to my previous post concerning birdsongs and is why I posted this...

    barren nights

The towhee was the bird that first intrigued me way back during my initial forays into the barrens, Bob. They'd commonly be scratching nearby, calling their "chewink!" or singing "drink your teeeeeeaaaa --ah!" And the cat birds would almost always be right there, scowing from a tree. If there...

    barren nights

Alfie, I know you've never been a fan of my blurry photos. :) You already know how these are taken, since you've been in on a few of my photo sessions, but to explain -- the blurry sand road photos are taken from my vehicle while in motion. To me, these photographs are alive with the...

moontan journey Getting to my secret moontan beach is the best part. (Who needs a suntan at the Jersey Shore when the full moon will do the job, in the pine barrens!) Drat. I forgot my moonblock. Bill

I don't know anybody around here that takes "unusual" night photos. Wonk. Wonk. Bill

    barren nights

Recipe for photo disaster: Turn vehicle, blocking sand road, pointing headlights directly into cedar swamp. Leave vehicle, hoping nobody drives along, and crawl into cedar swamp. Lie on ground and steady camera as best one can and set for a longer shutter speed (some blurring helps). Manual...

    barren nights

Thanks again, everybody. Good call, I.S.! :) There was a notable difference in Bennie within 24 hours. I wonder if Lyme affects animals differently. I don't think treatment for humans for this disease results in such a marked difference so quickly. On another note, I took a new...

    barren nights

Thanks, Gentlemen. At least the vet didn't have to put my dog down. Bennie was all bent up, arthritically, and couldn't even stand. He's pretty old, and I figured it was "time". Turns out he has Lyme disease -- and the doctor promises a strong antibiotic shot given this evening will help...

    barren nights

Tough couple of days. I'd recently reconnected with a great childhood friend -- Brian and I spent over a dozen years hanging out together on a near-daily basis; carefree play. We crossed paths again as we both have sons involved with our local Little League (and they're darned good players)...

    June in the Woods

Nothing more alluring than a secluded, shaded stream in the pine barrens. Trips like this can be a bit of tough on the photography equipment, though. Real, real nice work, Bob. I love the adventure spirit members on the forum have. Brings back memories ... Back in my less lazy...

    more herps from the pines:

I second this thought. Thanks for sharing! I notice some of these were taken at night! Scary time to be out there, isn't it? :) Bill

it's an older one, but thought I'd bring it over from the other side ... (which gives me an opportunity to add that I've noticed some of the darker shots I post here on this thread and in my gallery look really bad on many monitors - - apologies to those that have such and are forced to look...

    Pygmy Pines?

Al and I have been on a pair of one-day trips the the 'gunks -- the first to Minnewaska State Park Preserve (which is beautiful, as well) and later to Sam's Point Preserve. This makes for a long, rigorous day, as the roundtrip alone is 8 hours. Sam's Point is less suited to the general public...

    Pygmy Pines?

My favorite dwarf pine area in the pine barrens, far and away, is Spring Hill. Maybe because these seem more "far and away" from civilization. I think my favorite dwarf pines on this planet (not that I've seen that many) are on Sam's Point Preserve in the Shawangunk Mountains in New York...

Stones, Monuments, Turtles, and a Snake

Alf-alf-a! You know how long I've wanted an ants-on-a-rampants, pitter-patter field recording. Could we go back to these hills and stir some up? I'd only ask you to stay on the two-foot hills long enough to get some high-volume ant-footwork action. If a few take some skin, that might sound...

    Rainbow

For rainbow fans, the Astronomy Picture of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) offers a photo of a rare fire rainbow taken in Whiting, NJ. The link above will work until midnight (it changes to a different photo every day); but I've posted a permanent link to the photo at...

    Coyote puppies

"Beautiful and scary at the same time," is a wonderful description, Jay. You don't know how much I want to capture their baying on a recording -- well, I've accomplished this once, but the pack had to be a mile distant, and the result is poor (though still haunting enough); in fact, I never...
