I also have my car gps set to north up. I get even more confused in the car while driving if north is not up then I do in the woods with a hand held.

Sometimes I do get confused a bit while heading south but then I just turn the gps upside down and it's all good:-)

Now that I see the eye closeup I say Woodcock as well. Don't know their nesting habits but that looks like a Woodcock eye to me.

Head shape looked to me like a Whipoorwill or Nighthawk but their also ground nesters aren't they?

Judging by eye color I"d say it's a female.Would have to see the plastron to know for sure.

It is not a tooth mushroom then.They have an odd shape and odd gills and exude red liquid but they feel and smell like your everyday mushroom.I thought the sap I was seeing was the clear form of the red liquid.

Oh I whought you were there smoke jumper.I guess my next question Did you touch it? is answered.It looks like a tooth shroom to me.Shape and color is right but I can't touch it to see if it's a shroom.Some species "bleed" red liquid,this looks to be bleeding clear.
