    North, South or Central?

Now I am really confused! I have a copy of a May 1, 1863 deed between Archibald Campbell and Alexander Moore that states, “Beginning at a stone set in the middle of the public road beginning from George B Cakes Tavern to Maul’s Bridge..." Within is no mention of church property. That May 1, 1863...

    North, South or Central?

Ms. Trusty spoke to a full house! She is a good speaker. As a trustee of the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, I am grateful that Emma shared her story with us. She was able to collect together scattered threads and family narratives to help document this little-known story of our...

    North, South or Central?

Jerseyman, Thank you for looking into the matter. Good stuff. Maybe you can help clear up mysteries. There has been much confusion about the church’s name, as its documentation is scant as noted by Petway (1961, History of Negroes in Vineland). She believes the Buena church started in 1858 by...

    North, South or Central?

Sorry Boyd, The point needs better explanation. The North, South or Central thread is based on work by writer/director Steve Chernoski, who made New Jersey: The Movie about the East/West North/South Jersey divide. He is now looking into settlement patterns associated with that cultural divide...

    Where is this?

Sorry, that's 50-foot today. Here's 100-foot in August 1980, when it was already past its heyday. I just found the photos amongst some books and had to bring some dignity back to the feature. RIP. Resting after swimming in the spungs. I miss my 1970 F-100, the rapid rabbit. Note the...

Pine Barrens: Life and Legends with Budd Wilson and Ted Gordon

Horray! Stockton returned to its roots as the Pine Barrens teaching institution through the efforts of the South Jersey Culture & History Center. Kudos to Ted, Uncle Budd, Kinsella, Jerseyman, and the Arts and Humanities students who worked hard to make Life and Legends a remarkable success...

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

I too have interest in drones, and was peripherally involved with a project. Drones have great potential for scientific application. A colleague wanted to monitor permafrost dynamics for signs of global warming using drone-based laser altimetry to map seasonal fluctuations in the active layer of...

    Aurora tonight?

Stars were bright in Richland. There was a glowing faint red haze, but it didn't "flash" so had no way to link it to aurora. I too lament the loss of stars due to encroaching urbanization. My municipality requires developers to add streetlights along roadways. We tried to adopt a model light...

    Where is this?

I think the name for the hill is Tabor Mountain or the Ivory Tower. It is a good example of invert topography. Iron-rich muck formed in an old river bottom. The river dried up several million years ago as the iron-rich muck hardened into ironstone. Now the river bottom was harder than the old...

    Anyone for ice fishing?

Too much work. Haven't ice fished since the severe winter of 76/77. By the time I cut a hole in the ice big enough to put the boat in, I was too tired to fish.

Historic Preservation in Wharton State Forest: A Lost Cause?

You can access the volume through the Stockton College Library site "Digital Collections." http://stockton.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/p15980coll5 I tried to put direct links specifically to Ben's piece on Atsion...

    Cumberland County Stones

Manumuskin, I have found three ancient Maurice River crossings in the Vineland area, Forked Bridge (or Woodbury or Lake or Egg Harbor Road, ~Weymouth Road); Mauls Bridge (Cohansey or Egg Harbour Road, ~Almond and Wheat Roads), and Mulfords Bridge (Horse Wallow Road, replaced upstream by Sherman...

    Cumberland County Stones

Look along Union Lake. Sorry for the slow reply. You aren't the only one interested in Cumberland County rocks. I was in San Francisco, at the American Geophysical Union, presenting on Pine Barrens wind faceted stones. Ventifacts are indicative of strong winds moving abundant sand in a...

    Cumberland County Stones

LOL! No, it's a science thing. I have a need to put something in the photo that denotes scale. BTW, that "ultra-lite" spade is made of special super-strong aircraft alloy and is manufactured in Bridgeton. Most of my published photos include "scale" tools of local provinance.

    Cumberland County Stones

I took this picture some years back when doing geologic work with owners permission. It was along the original trace of the Mollocas (Malaga) Indian trail above the Union House, and, if memory is correct, was described as a mile stone. I'll double check with my original source. S.M.
