    Lawrence Line Survey

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but those stones and the hole arrangement suggest the possibility of stone RR ties, AKA "sleepers", such as those used on the early Camden & Amboy. Most of the ones I've seen had only two holes and also had flat spots chiseled for, or worn in by, the tie plates...

Forgotten Towns Of The New Jersey Pine Barrens

The presentation will offer nothing earth-shattering to the gang here, who are mostly well versed on the topic. It's a pretty basic one, geared towards the uninitiated audiences typical of our park programs.Somewhat of a companion presentation to the van tour we've offered for years.

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

Nice work Guy. I've been visiting 1-2 times a week and have seen signs of others clearing as well. They usually re-block the pipe within 3 days or so at the most and it takes at least a full day to back the water up to the bog. Persistent little varmints they are. I've taken to getting in front...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

As an update to this situation, the state is aware of the problem and is in agreement that it needs to be addressed. They have been periodically sending staff to remove blockages with the intent of lowering the water level enough to be able to install one of the commercial devices used to...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

I didn't take the post that way either. I tend to find conversations where there is 100% agreement boring and not worth having. ;) I'd recommend holding off on the petition for just a bit. Simply talking to the right person may be more productive. In other words, the old catching more flies...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

Bob, I'm also fairly confident that this site was human-created, but was merely pointing out that humans and beaver are not the only sources of disturbance. Addressing JD, I can only refer back to my comments about the value of this specific site. Beavers are indeed natural, and on any other...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

Disturbance does not have to be human-caused, or even from busy beavers. Forest fire has been the single biggest source of disturbance in the pine barrens since it formed. A hot fire that sweeps through a forested wetland opens up the canopy to encourage species such as those found at Webbs...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

Most of the plants found there are disturbance-oriented ones, and the flooding is merely another form of disturbance. If enough time passes between flooding they will come back, some faster than others. As far as maintenance goes, the site is part of Greenwood Forest WMA, which is state...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

You nailed it. That road is only there because it pre-dates 539. There are East/West roads connecting it to 539 on both sides of Webbs Mill Branch and it no longer serves a purpose, considering the problems occurring there. I also remember it being discussed by the powers that be and there...

Webbs Mill flooded by beaver again?

Right now the flooding is not due to new beaver activity but to the culvert pipe going under the road downstream being clogged, with none of the offending material showing signs of being cut by beaver. There was virtually no flow coming out of the pipe and the water was rushing over and across...

    CLOSED

Roger, of course. I don't think he chipped in during my wildlife class. Perhaps it was a year or so later. I did take both his edible plants and meats classes though. Most useful two credits of my time there :). He helped get my air gun back from the University Police Chief after a slight...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

I think you are putting too much thought into the long-term end of the process rather than the beginning. In the present day, unemployed people are simply handed money, with nothing expected in return. Back then the priority was putting people to work, doing anything remotely considered...

Trout Season Early Opener 4-1-20 !

Hey, I do housework. I just do it to my own standards, which leaves me the other 9/10ths of the of the day to pursue higher priorities.

Trout Season Early Opener 4-1-20 !

I've been killing time at my vise recently, even though I most likely already have enough flies to last until I either die or start causing a silver alert while driving to my streams.

Parks, Forests, WMAs open only for passive recreation

I just checked the Division's website to see if the WMAs have been closed beyond the shooting ranges and they are stated to still be open. I've been letting the dogs stretch their legs in a few of them since being home more days. Nice thing about them is the absence of blazed trails and the less...

    Isolation 2020

Your last sentence is the most important message in all of this. The folks complaining about their lost freedoms and some imaginary grab for power seem oblivious to the fact that these measures are not just about protecting them. They are to protect others they may come in contact with. My wife...

    Fire Break

Bob, breaks like this aren't expected to stop a wildfire. They serve more as safe starting points for backfires if a fire approaching that development is imminent. In the warm, windy conditions that typically coincide with wildfires, the last thing wanted would be to start a backfire right up...

    Isolation 2020

Don't be taken by that snake oil salesman! I get the real stuff from my good Doctor Smith down in Egg Harbor. He's even got a wading pool to cool yer heels in. ;)

Parks, Forests, WMAs open only for passive recreation

Wells Mills was crowded today, as it was the last few. Parking lot 3/4 full, and people walking the fields, trails, using picnic areas. Lots of HS and college aged kids too, which was nice to see. Sad it took this to bring them all out.
