Hiking the old CNJ tracks from Atsion to Carranza

It looks like the culverts clogged with debris and the water took the next easiest path. Even if back-filled, the culverts would have to be cleared as well, but I don't think it's an issue of how easily it could be done as much as who is going to do it, and why. The state forest doesn't own it...

    Front coming thru today

I paddled the Batsto yesterday, from the millpond down to the Forks, then back up the Mullica. It's a neat trip, with no shuttle and a 15 minute walk back to where you left your vehicle at the start. There were a few trees down near the sawmill portage and quite a few more blocking the river...

Hiking the old CNJ tracks from Atsion to Carranza

That will be a disappointment if it's true. Most of those I hike with find long hikes on railbeds monotonous, but I enjoy them and have done this stretch a few times and losing a trestle would be a bummer. I'm getting too old for attempting a Wallenda-style crossing. I'd think Wharton SF has no...

    LETTER: Hunters pay their way

Maybe, but one needs to have fun where one can find it. Anyway, one of the cardinal rules of safe gun handling during hunting is being sure of your target and beyond. It is the beyond part that concerns me, not the target, which I not only have to identify but discern the vital zone of. Hard to...

    LETTER: Hunters pay their way

Al, the hunter orange, or any other bright color one might wear, isn't so much to differentiate a human from a game animal as it is to avoid taking a shot at game when there might be a person off in the distance, who you might otherwise not notice. A person walking across an open field might be...

    LETTER: Hunters pay their way

I take issue with the first half of the letter, as I do not feel that the financial contributions sportsmen make to public lands and to local economies are a relevant and an effective response to what most opponents consider a safety issue, even though the statements are true. The writer does...

    Definition of a Piney

I stopped short of posting on the North, South, Central Jersey thread but my answer would be the same as for this one. There isn't an answer. There are just opinions. There might have been a clearer definition some time ago but the term has been around too long and has evolved too much to be cut...

    Bass Pro Shop opens

Checked them out the other night. More of a family outing than serious shopping. I picked up a fly rod case that isn't available anyplace closeby. I much prefer to give my money to locally owned small shops than any of the big boxes anyway.

    Where is this?

Where aside, I'm pretty sure I know when! ;)

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

I hate to sound cold-hearted, but I'm less concerned about the danger at sites such as this as I am history being stolen, one brick as a time. Sometimes you either need a fence, or the ugly cement cap protecting the remains of the mill walls that was used here. I'm not sure which is worse.

Did some snooping myself. Try searching "Cobra Fantail 2" :)

looking for some fishing lure info

I think it is a crawfish plug called "Cobra". Not sure if that was the company or model. I gave most of my bass fishing tackle to a nephew some time after I moved from the northern part of the state to the shore area about 30 years ago, but I'm sure I had a few. The only reason I remember them...

    Heritage Minerals site

The long-fought Walmart in my town (LEHT) is on the verge of being built as well. I've grown more pessimistic as time grows on. Those of us who give a crap about preserving what is left in it's natural or undeveloped state are far outnumbered by those who don't. We win battles here and there...

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

I hope so too. I am also not thrilled with game cameras, baiting, inline muzzleloaders and bows with training wheels. There was a time when you took pride in your skills and woodsmanship when bagging game. Now many of my fellow hunters seem on a constant quest for ways to purchase their success...

    River reports?

The liveries serving the rivers you are interested in might be the best sources of the information you are looking for, assuming they are not still closed for the season. They keep pretty good tabs on the conditions since they tend to do most of the clearing.

Conte family to sell farm but not to developers

Very sad news. We used to take our kids there every fall when they were younger, riding in the farm trailer out to pick apples and pumpkins, enjoying the hay bale maze, and finishing by letting them pick out goodies from the bake shop. I've stopped there and picked up some fresh produce many...

    Bald Eagle rescue yesterday

My personal view when it comes to animal rescue/rehabilitation is that it is a nice thing to do, and I would lean towards stepping in myself to help an individual animal when I could, but the person doing it benefits from the action more than the species does. Nature can be very cruel, by human...

    Illegal Dumping Pilot Program

If it's not your property, dumping anything is illegal. The lack of harm it causes isn't exactly relevant. It's much like digging up plants. You could claim taking one itty bitty mountain laurel ain't hurting anything. But then you'd have to have a complex list of things you can take, or can...

    Snow in the Pines

Just took the lab for a short walk on the golf course behind my house. Bitter cold wind but he had a great time! Must be nice being a dog.

    Snow in the Pines

I cancelled a small program I had going today, as much for the predicted cold as the snow. Not a nature walk kinda day, for most at least!
