I had heard the DEP did this in the early 80's but I was skeptical. August 4th 1981

Maybe the theory was the black cats would cross the path of the deer and then they would be hexed with bad luck, step out in front of truck and be killed ??? This could explain a lot of the road kills over the last 60 years. :)

    Evans Bridge memorial

I even kinda remember that Bob had a small Thermos of coffee stashed near the bridge and I thought it was weird to drink coffee after a long hike in warm weather. Especially with cold beers nestled snugly on ice in coolers less than a mile away. I am thinking of another time ???

    Evans Bridge memorial

Bob did take us to it on the Big Trip. I remembered that as soon as I saw the current picture. We spent a few minutes around the bridge before malikng the final push to the camp.

Metal detecting enthusiast...question about Dunbarton baseball field and Fleming Pike

The State misspelled it Guy. It was and still is owned by the Grasso family. It is actively farmed, usually in field corn.

    Rails At Double Trouble

Very cool and very interesting Guy. Now we know a lot more about them than we did just a few weeks ago. I like Historic Aerials even though it is painfully slow and the quality is sometimes a little poor. They really like their watermarks too. I have used their site for work projects and...

manmade field in Wharton and an area cleared many years ago

Yes Gipsie and the nearby Eleanor Adams and Tylertown feedstrips. Until you posted this, I never knew them by any other name than the Bulltown rye strips. I never noticed that the names appear on the Google mappings. The Tylertown strips shown at the bottom of the attached is where I spent...

manmade field in Wharton and an area cleared many years ago

The State USED to do that. The small rectangles are rye fields planted by the State to encourage a healthy deer herd and to provide hunters with enhanced opportunities. The fields in the photos were built in the 60's and I hunted around them and the Bulltown rye strips with my father...

manmade field in Wharton and an area cleared many years ago

Dave, That clear cut was done around 1990. We used to take my kids and the neighbor's kids spotting back there in my '87 F-350. The few trees that were left standing are known as seed trees. When clear cutting with no plans to manually replant using seedlings, one leaves the most superior...

    An Island Along The Sleeper

Very nice gents. I am sorry I couldn't make this one. My son Jeff and I got a brief look at the area on Friday while doing some scouting for quacker spots. Visiting the Sleeper is always a winner in my book.

Crossing is out Constable Bridge Road

This probably happened this past spring but I found out the hard way today while travelling to a hunting spot. The major pipe crossing on the way to Batsto just southeast of Wescoat Bogs is now impassable. It is at N39d 41.671min x W074d 41.394 min The stream overcame both sides and the top...

A Creek And Three Branches, A PBX Hike

It was good to get back into the big woods after the long hiatus since the May trip. Chris put together a killer hike and we saw a lot of remote country that few have ever tread. The cedar swamp stretch in the afternoon damn near killed me as I struggled to keep up with the hippers holding me...

Guided tour of the Pedricktown Marsh

Better wear a hard hat and eye protection. :) Oldmans is one of the most popular south zone duck hunting areas in NJ and the first part of the split season will be in full swing tomorrow.

    Quick Ride To PineyTown

It's a black and white and most of the time black, 1 year old male springer. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there appears to be more wood ducks in the pines this year than in any year in my somewhat aged memory.

    Quick Ride To PineyTown

Yes sir it is. Used to be some of the best duckin' around. A sad but awesome sight to see it in its blown-through state. I remember setting a dozen and a half dekes or more in some of the ponds that were there. It really needs a busload of beavers to be dropped off with some good maps to...

    Quick Ride To PineyTown

My son and I took the dogs out for a run tonight and for a change of scenery, we checked an old bog area I used to duck hunt quite a bit in the 80's and early 90's. My son wanted to scope it out for this coming weekend but I didn't hold much hope since I stopped hunting it few years back due...

    Mott's Creek Kayak Kruiser

Yes it's the Motts Creek Inn. It's got a lot of character. Makes for a good motorcycle ride from my house.

    Mott's Creek Kayak Kruiser

I was down Mott's a few weeks ago for the 19th annual Mott's Creek Crab tournament (my son won by the way). While we were out on the water, I saw what I believe to be some very fine backwoods kayak ingenuity. I didn't have my camera but a friend took a regular picture of it in the parking lot...
