    1st of the season

A point of interest is that this fire burned right through a Natural Heritage Priority site; the West Plains Fireshed Macrosite. Dead center right through it. This is a globally imperiled natural community of pitch pine-shrub oak barrens and pine plains vegetation. Without fire, it would be gone...

    1st of the season

Yes, it's puzzling. I was in the woods the day the fire started, over by Shoal Branch. The winds were strong out of the SSW. I thought backfires would have been set to meet the fire, not to catch up with it. But it does kind of make sense, what they did. It was a way to protect Warren Grove--if...

    1st of the season

I was at Spring Hill today, at that spot. Quite a mess on top of that hill. The shocking blue reflection of beer cans etc. But it is odd that there was evidence of fire all the way there from Sims place.

Looks like Papoose Branch headwaters. Good for studying plants next year, and maybe this year too.

    House/Barn on Atsion Road

That gets a "hmmm". That appears to be vent on top.

    1st of the season

I have big chunks (1/4" or more) of burnt pine ash on my deck this morning.

    Hammock the Batona

    You should have no problem.

    1st of the season

I was exploring off Bailey Road by the Shoal Branch, and could see the smoke, but understood the wind was out of the SW, so felt safe. At about 5 PM I left and drove through Chatsworth. Odd to see all the people milling about behind the elementary school. I usually take Savoy NE to go home but...

    Stump grinding

I have a hammer drill and a pretty long bit if you want to use it. But I don't understand why it would have to be the hammer selector used. You just rotate the head to use the drill side.

    Stump grinding

I think closer to the latter (but I think $500 is high). I never did use a pro. In my youth I've dug out a few. Never a pleasant job. Especially when you get to one ornery root when you can't get enough dirt out to saw it, and in frustration you start hacking at it with an axe, and it starts...

    Guess Who ?

Well said Ben. It is striking how one-sided they went about this, and then banished to the "bad side" anybody who voiced even a hint of compromise towards keeping most of the historical roads in Wharton open while rightfully blocking off a few abused ponds and other areas like 1/4 mile. I was...

    Guess Who ?

Well! He's right and every one of us are wrong. I can say something about that, but I'm gonna take the high road.

    Guess Who ?

    That is factually incorrect.

    Guess Who ?

Guy is NOT talking about signs. He and others from this site helped them build the barriers. And yeah, you're damned right they pressured DEP. It's their forest too. Throughout this entire conversation Al, you've spoken as if it were the people on this forum who entered quarter-mile and tore it...

    Guess Who ?

[ You really have no idea on how to organize large scale cleanups Al. It takes months of planning. Also, several of the people on this forum did assist with the barrier installations done a couple years ago, both at Mount and the West side of 206. They worked hard at it all day, and they saw...

    Guess Who ?

Yes. But I'll still live. I'm not sure what they are going to do. Personally, I'd rather see them left open to the public except for sensitive areas. Perhaps they'll come up with a new paradigm to do that.

    Guess Who ?

I have been on the Forked River Mountain Coalition as an officer or Board member since 1995. We (including quite a few people from this forum) have taken over one million pounds of waste out of these woods in the last 25 years. Cars, tires, concrete, appliances, and tons of other junk. And...

    Guess Who ?

Al, I hope you don't get your way. You're like the man who built a house next to a racetrack, and then stood on the porch shaking his fist and yelling at the cars going in to enjoy what they do. Enduro events were here long before you were, and they are part and parcel to pine barren history...

    Guess Who ?

I agree. That is not too much to ask. I've been roaming these woods for over 45 years, and never once felt inconvenienced by Enduro events.
