    It's Still There

I met that woman once, and we talked. The conversation somehow got around to her seeing a bearded ruffian wearing camouflage pants. Sounded like she was describing you. Said she'd smack you right in the face if you came near her church. Her face was all red when she said it, and her voice was...

That is very early for a nymph, in my experience.

Nomad, it sounds as if you are looking for a more technical exploration experience. We usually don't search for lost towns, graveyards, or historical areas in general. Most of these guys are hunters, fishermen, and/or botanists who just enjoy nature and the varied terrain. We don't use...

    Help on Applegate Sawmill

Where would they get the running water power for a sawmill on Cattus Island? Those two creeks look minuscule for the needs of a sawmill. I'm not challenging you, I'm just curious what your thoughts are. Tidal?

If you look closely, you can see what looks like places for the opposition to fire from, kind of like square concrete bunkers with the backs open. But then again, maybe they are places to hang targets.

I think that is a depression now. They took that material to be used elsewhere--you can see the machinery marks. Also note that wedge is about 1 mile long. Quite a long clearing. Also, the clearing was always low, you may be looking at the wrong place on the topo.

Interesting, right? I'm surprised they'd do anything there with a wetland running through it.

Thanks for putting this together Guy. It's really nice to have them all referenced in one place. Here is the one you have with the question mark. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/big-spung-pine-barren-exploring.10251/

    2017-18 Winter weather

Power was out for 16 hours here. Hated it. Work crews from other states all over this neck of the woods.

Also, from "Place Names of Ocean County New Jersey" (Vivian Zinkin, 1976); Phoenix Forge: Because the forge, rebuilt shortly after it was destroyed by fire, appeared to rise like the Phoenix from it's ashes. Other names: Phoenix 1828, Old Union Forge 1839, Phoenix Furnace, 1846.

Guy, that symbol of a Phoenix jogged my memory of a forge or furnace I read somewhere named "Phoenix". Sure enough, it's on page 112 of "Early Forges and Furnaces in New Jersey" by Boyer. Over by Lakehurst in the 1820's or so. Perhaps it's relevant to that item.

    2017-18 Winter weather

I used my grandsons baseball bat to fling it several feet in the air to knock the snow off the cable line. It worked, but the bat ended up deep in the snow among the brush in the woods. I thought, now I've done it, that will be there till Spring. But then I remembered today's date. :p

What is meant here, are you saying Drinker was interned falsely, or are you saying he had a change of heart and decided to support the cause. Which? I find it unique that it's not symmetrical. Are you sure it's a dove, and not a different bird? I can't resolve the plume on the head. Guy, did...

Another issue is how the tree supposedly created this strategy for more fruitful (pun intended) procreation by manipulating it's DNA in order to entice birds in a timely manner. That must be a really hard one to prove.

Have you been reading the Farmers Almanac again? Did you ask the birds? :D Sorry Al. I am always suspicious of this kind of folklore. But, I do have an open mind. If someone grew 100 trees, and only one was colorful, and they found the birds did not land on any other but the colorful one, I'd...

    Facebook Too Big?

Well, I do think education should start playing a big part by discussing how young people are basically targets for many things, and how they should do critical thinking to ensure they are not believing in bull crap. But yes, so many people really may be gullible enough to sway an election one...
