How to prevent spider bites in woods

What kind of boots do you wear? I hope you are not wearing regular leather hiking boots.

    Pine Barren Flora

Thanks Ron, interesting! I love the color of that moth, and the markings. The orange-rusty-rootbeer colors go well with the black and cream.

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Sue, I have a zoom dissection microscope that zooms in to 50X. I simply shoot a photo through the eyepiece lens. That is how I did the photo of the 3 together. I also have a compound microscope with powers of 40X, 100X, 400X, and 1,000X. I place the offensive tick on a slide in a drop of water...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Yesterday was the first day I got the little ones on me this year. Sue and Al (via our mutual friend) pointed out that they were not chiggers after all when I saw this type of patch of critters on my leg just above the knee. Now I certainly see what they mean. These are just .7 mm long. They...

    Rattlesnake

Thanks Guy. I have no clue. Maybe bark. I note that there is no slot, it's just a piece of twig making it look that way.

    Rattlesnake

Guy, can you zoom in on this? What does it appear to be? It may just be a section of bark, but it looks oddly out of place.

    Pine Barren Flora

Here is my most puzzling orchid problem. I found this orchid deep in the pine plains 3 years ago. The name of this orchid is Platanthera X bicolor. It is supposedly a hybrid between a white fringed orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis) and a yellow fringed orchid (Platanthera ciliaris), and very...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Another female America Dog Tick picked up near Pemberton, in farm country. This tick gave me no reaction on my leg at all.

I saw that hole on the aerial. Seems a very ignorant move, to dig that hole right next to a stream.

    Solar Eclipse 2017

I was in Francis Marion Forest once, in 1977. I was doing a summer of work at the Charleston Navy Shipyard. The trees are tall, best you find an open spot around there. If I recall, there were not that many open areas, but things may have changed.

Thank you for that input Mark. My guess is the author meant here, shown below, at the "X", where 54 crosses the railroad. Is that about where you mean as well?

    Early Location Reference

A question for anyone having knowledge on this subject. I have a slip of paper with a reference to a location related to botany. The paper reads: 12th St. Sta,. Folsom, Atlantic Co., on Hospitality Branch. July, 1909 I know where the Hospitality branch is in Folsom. But do you think the author...

    Pine Barren Flora

Al, they are the same species: Platanthera cristata (crested-fringe orchid). It's just that they seem to respond differently to different habitat in my experience. PS: I want to add that in the future, I plan to cut one flower off from each for comparison. Maybe I'm missing something. With the...

Yes, that pond is the feather-bed branch, where the branch begins up by the railroad. Here is the location for that fence. Odd, first thing came to mind was somebody was penning snappers for sale. It's about, oh, 50 yards upstream from the road.
