    JCRR photo and some info

Actually High Crossing wasn't lowered becauce of the benevolance of our state, but to allow access to a big fire there a couple of years ago. Walk the trail that parallels the south side of the tracks from Medium Crossing (maybe it should be Uncrossing)to the Batsto river. It's all burned out...

    Friendship bogs history

Guy, I'm glad you found the monument. I think your pictures are fine, they download quickly (DSL) and I like the detail. I even took copies of the picture of the jeep on the tracks at the Batsto bridge with me just to do my own on site comparison. What kind of camera do you use? I'm assuming...

    Protecting Communities from Wildfire

In the 70's I used to get permits to cut firewood at the Atsion ranger station. This was during and after the oil embargo. They only issued so many permits per day, so the line started before 3:00 AM. We would line up our trucks and the ranger would lead us to the cutting area. We were allowed...

The Woods are Full of Surprises

The bridge still looks like your picture as of last fall. Do you know how to find the bridge from the Lower Forge campsite side?

    Markers in the pines

Guy, there's also a similar marker near the blueberry monument at Friendship. It appears old, as the concrete is worn. When you visit the monument, park your car there. Walk up the road that you took off the road from Friendship. It's pine needle covered once you get past the monument area...

    Friendship bogs history

Guy, Take Carranza Rd past the memorial, it's now dirt, to Friendship. Friendship is where you go over a bridge and the road takes a sharp left to Speedwell. The Friendship area is very open, with bogs to the left and right as you go over the bridge, and the ruins of Friendship are directly in...

    JCRR marker

We would leave Friday evening, even in the dark, find dry ground and start again next mornimg. We took our time, spent Saturday night out also, and got picked up Sunday. This was done at the end of May, lots of water. We used a long wooden canoe, heavy, but never thought it was a problem. Oh to...

    white stakes near Carranza monument

I also walked to them on Friday. When I was there last, 1998, there were many more, and many rows deep on both sides of the tracks. They looked new then, but there were many more old ones scattered around the ground. They had been replaced and had termite dammaged bottoms. I don't buy the bike...

    JCRR marker

I think I saw the concrete footings around Pine Crest, back in the mid 90's. They were on the southern side of the tracks. I don't recall anything 3 feet tall, just footings and some embedded rebar. The tracks were removed near Chatsworth when the irrigation ditch was dug from Chatswoth lake to...

    white stakes near Carranza monument

These stakes were no more than 2 feet long, not very deep in the ground. They were there long enough that someone took the time to replace them, the old ones were on the ground with rotten bottoms. They were definitely marking a grid, fuzzy recollection of 50 feet square. The letters went from...

    white stakes near Carranza monument

No, thats not them. Traveling down Carranza road, make a left at the tracks. The stakes are between the road and Pine Crest. They had # on them such as I9, I10, k1, k2, ect. I'll try and get there this week to see if they are still there in any quantity. I did see a few driving through on March...

What year was that, Guy? The doors are at what I think is Pine Crest. Ed

    I found the landing gear!

With the help of Guy's directions, I found the landing gear at Bear Swamp Hill on Sunday. Thanks Guy! The lawn chair is still there, right where the road from the tower ends and you turn right to enter the cedars. Can anyone tell me more about the crash, especiall the date? I'd like to look it...

    Then and Now

Guy, I would very much like to see higher resolution photos. I remember how interesting it was driving across that old wooden bridge as it leaned to one side. Unfortunately I took no pictures. I parked at the bridge at Hampton Furnace yesterday morning (6:30 AM) and hiked in to the Batsto...

    white stakes near Carranza monument

Teriffic pictures. Look at those bell bottoms! I miss the 70's. your bridge picture is flipped. You can't ride the rails anymore, the pines have grown up between the tracks. I thought an occasional train still operated in 1978. Can you supply a story to go with the pictures? Ed

    white stakes near Carranza monument

I saw some of the grid marker last Sunday. They're white and stick up about 18 inches. I don't know what your "Strange Markers" are. The PVC pipes are driven into the ground, and stick up about 2 feet. I've forgotten exactly where they are, but one is somewhere south and west of high crossing.

    Friendship bogs history

Can anyone help me find out more about Friendship bogs? I've seen the granit monument, but I'm interested in when it began, was it dug by hand or machine, when was it abandoned/turned over to the state, ect. Thanks, Ed

    white stakes near Carranza monument

I found them while hiking the railroad tracks from Carranza to Chatsworth. I started where the tracks cross Carranza road. Two miles from Carranza road is a rough estimate. If you don't want to miss them, start at the dirt road on the west side of the tracks. They're before that road crosses the...

    white stakes near Carranza monument

When traveling past Carranza monument, if you turn left just before the railroad tracks and parallel them, after a couple of miles I came upon a large area with a grid of white numbered stakes in the ground. Someone spent alot of time palcing them over several acres. Any idea as to why? Ed
