PERSEID METEOR UPDATE: Earth is entering the debris stream of comet Swift-Tuttle and this is causing the annual Perseid meteor shower. According to the International Meteor Organization, observers are now counting as many as 25 meteors Perseids per hour during the dark hours before dawn. It's going to get even better: The shower is expected to peak on August 12th with rates as high as 100 per hour. Stay tuned for updates."

Only partly cloudy tonight, i am hoping the northeast sky is clear and just clouds to the west. It's a short 10 min drive for me. I will be up by the range gate.

Went outside last night around 11:00 and it was too overcast to see any stars.

Tonight's forecast calls for cloudy skies with a 30% chance of rain...

I am packed and ready to head out for a couple of days. Hope to set my tent up between "showers".... I will be watching as well, from a remote pines location. Lovely!

I went out in the woods last night between 10:00 and 11:00 and watched the sky for awhile. There were clouds blowing around and you could see some stars part of the time, but no meteors.

It was nice out in the woods last night, but completely overcast. All I could see was a couple of the brightest stars and no meteors....

I took 2100+ photos through the night (10pm-5am). There was some passing cloud cover but for the most part it was clear. I only had 18 shots with meteors in them. This one is only interesting because of the cloud.

2100 photos? Wow, I wouldn't have the patience to review all of those. Nice shot though!

SUBSIDING PERSEIDS: Earth is exiting the debris stream of Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the Perseid meteor shower. According to the International Meteor Organization, dark-sky observers are now counting fewer than 20 to 30 Perseids per hour, a sharp drop from the peak of 100 per hour on August 13th. The show is essentially over, except for some lingering debris

Incredible shot, Pancoast. This is the first year in recent memory when I didn't see a single Perseid. (Two years ago I saw a great display in a local WMA, with coyotes howling all around me.) Well, I've seen yours now. I'm thinking this is one of the nicest meteor photos I've seen.
