The intricate art of wildfowl carving will be on display at Central Regional High School this weekend at the Ocean County YMCA's 27th annual Toms River Art and Decoy Show.
Decoy carvers from up and down the East Coast are expected to attend the event, which will feature a wide array of exhibitors, artists, jewelers, supplies and a decoy carving contest, said Janet Sellitto, administrative assistant and special events organizer for the YMCA.
"Everything is for sale," she said.
The show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the high school gymnasium. It's co-sponsored by the Central Regional High School Key Club and the New Jersey Wildfowl Carvers Association.
A $5 donation is requested for admission, but anyone interested in attending can print out the flier on the YMCA's "special events" page on the Y's website at www.ocymca.org and receive a $1 discount on the admission fee, Sellito said.
A decoy judging competition begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and runs to around 3 p.m.. This year's bird is the hooded merganser.
"The judging is done in front of the public," Sellito said. "It's interesting to watch. We have judges from all over."
Children will be able to paint their own decoys from a blank decoy. A soap carving lesson for kids is also planned, she said.
Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Central Regional High School Key Club, which will man the concession stand.
Sellitto and her assistants begin preparing for the popular show in the summer.
"We have exhibitors calling all the time to see when the show is going to be," she said. "It's a lot of fun."
