This is annoying if you're currently in 609 (like me). Now you'll need to dial the area code (without the 1+) to call another 609 number.

https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/area-code-overlay-609-faqs/

Beginning January 20, 2018, if you have a 609 area code, you should start entering the area code for all calls. There will be a grace period, so if you forget and enter just 7 digits during the grace period, your call will still be completed.

Beginning August 18, 2018, if you have a 609 area code, the new calling procedure will be required for all calls. On or after this date, if you don't use the new calling procedure, your call won't be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again, including the area code.

Beginning September 17, 2018, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 640 area code. If you have a 640 area code, you must enter the area code and 7-digit phone number on all calls or the call won't be completed.

Thanks for the reminder. I heard about this but didn't know the schedule. Time to start getting people to put their area code 609 before the 7 digit phone number on signs, etc. Here is the official announcement and information:
https://www.nationalnanpa.com/pdf/PL_508.pdf
It also ends 'protected' codes between 609 and 856. Did you know about these? I didn't. These are the 3 digit 'NXX' numbers that were protected after the 856/609 split and so could be called without area code from either side. I think.
