A nice hike in the pines

Today i hiked this area as seen below in the link and it was a gorgeous day to be in the pines. If someone could tell me the river I was hiking along that'd be great. I'm not a big kayaker or canoer so i'm only where of the Mullica and some other major rivers.

This one below made me wonder theres bricks and stone all around in that area and its maybe an 1/8 to a 1/4 mile from The Hampton Furnace. Any clues?

Nice pix Mike. that would be the Skit Branch you were hiking along.
Did you happen to get a close up of the masonry work in the background of this shot? I've never seen it. Did you get close enough to it to tell what it is?

Its not the building just west of it. Its actually east od the furnace. I didn't get any shots up close but i saw stone, and some old brick and it was in a little clearing

Real nice pics Mike,the Hampton Furnace area is the first place i visited in the pines in the late 70's.

This was the picture of the bricks and rocks that questioned me. It's difficult to see any, However they are here and there and more are to the right of where i snapped that pic. Maybe a dumping spot years ago.

looks like a freshly graded hampton road and certainly not the trail that runs along the skit.

Yeah, I took that skit trail almost all the way then took a cut through till I approached the Furnace, then I turned around and started back. Thats the picture I took of the furnace just before I turned around

That area ahead of you in the swamp is one of the nicer places in the pines. Quite a bit of human disturbance, but very nice.

I also have a question for bird experts. While in the area between the Batona field and the railroad tracks I came across a bird that appeared to have the same body as some sort of gull. However despite its normal calls it made a deep loud sound almost like a growl that you'd hear from some animal. I don't know if it was its wings that did it from swooping down possibly or it has a unique sound it makes. This isn't the first time i stumbled arcross this bird. Regretably I could not get a picture of it. Not a very big bird but was capable of making a loud growling like noise. If anybody knows about this type of bird let me know. Otherwise i'll have to go back to that same spot and try and catch some footage or pictures of it.
