All,

It has been since April of 2011 that I had a hike with Rob from work and we figured it was about time to do it again. We usually try to do one at least once a year. I set this hike up for the Oswego River and the Papoose Branch area which normally is quite wet. Today was no exception. As soon as we entered the woods we were wet.

A very early and distorted Turkey Beard.

We traveled through quite a few varied savanna's. It is much too early for most of the plants we would have liked to see. I will be returning to these later next month or so.

Today Boyd found turtle sex and Rob found moth sex. This is Anisota virginiensis, commonly called an Oakworm Moth. The Female is the larger one on top doing all the work. They mate in the early morning and it lasts until around noon which was spot on.

Can you see it? I didn't. I walked right by it.

What plant is this? It grows in sandy area's much like Pickering's Morning Glory.

I almost crushed this little one.

While eating lunch around 11:30 it started to rain really hard and we got soaked. We were still a mile from my car and had to cross the Papoose and another waterway on the way. We both had problems seeing with our glasses but we eventually made it to the next crossing. Walking a log across I fell hard into a tree and now have a lump on my head to show for it. At the Papoose Branch Rob took a dip and the photo below shows him looking a little wet from the waist down.

Despite the poor weather we had an interesting day and I now just have to recover from it.
