This flatlander decided it was time to get back up to another area I really like, the Adirondacks in NY. I have been there about 6 times previously, but this time I went to the High Peaks area around Lake Placid. I set off this Tuesday, with the main goal to climb Mount Marcy (5400 feet), NY’s highest peak. This is a long hike up this mountain, 14.5 miles total up and back and it takes an 8-10 hour rough day.

I did not make it. I was not as physically prepared as I should have been. My mind was willing, but my heart was not. Plus, I overdid it, trying too hard. I did get 5 miles up the trail, to about 4,000 feet, but I regrettably had to turn back 5 miles to fight this battle another day. Nevertheless, it was a great little mini trip, and I’d like to share some photos:

This is Mount Marcy Dam, two miles into the hike.

Standing at the Dam, on the right is Algonquin Peak (I’m pretty sure). Note the huge smooth rock area. It looked ¼ mile long. Very cool.

This bridge was built to get you over the high water in Spring.

Up, Up, Up. It was strenuous to say the least. I was jealous of the young people going up quicker than me.

By the time I got to this level after 2.5 hours, I was whipped into submission.

Up around 3,800 feet or so, Indian Falls gives a great view.

Chipmunks looking for a handout. I love chipmunks. Chip and Dale were my favorites.

Hey, someone broke the rules and fed him!

I was very disappointed to have to turn back at 4,000 feet, but I was trying to ensure I did not have to be carried back by someone else enjoying their day. I got a surprise when I got back to the dam. I was fortunate to meet the legendary Pete Fish, 71 years old, making his 650th trip up Marcy. Absolutely amazing man, and very personable and helpful. When I told him I nearly died up there at 4,000 feet from the exertion he said…”Well, it’s a good place to die”…without cracking a smile. We talked about a few other things. I enjoyed my time spent with him.

Cascade Lake. I can look at these mountains all day, and I did. They fascinate me. They were made from rock that used to be 25 miles underground. I was stopping every ¼ mile to gaze up at them.

This was my cozy motel room. Very remote, in Upper Jay NY. I was the only person there all week. I am really starting to value silence. It truly is golden at times.

The Ausable River behind the motel. I went to the edge and sat in the sun on the rocks and just listened to the river.

A meadow area. Just like some places in the pines.

High Falls Gorge. Paid $10 to see it, but loved it.

Wow Man!
Thanks for that. Truly a treasure of views you brought back to the site.
If you really want to, you'll get up the next go around I'm sure.

Thanks you all, glad you enjoyed them. Here is one I forgot for the herpers. I found him by the high water bridge. It did not seem natural. He was very slow and plodding, perhaps cause it was about 63 degrees out? Is he a bull frog?

I love your photos. Lake Placid is indeed a fantastic area. It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of NJ for a while as I looked at these. :)

That looks to me like a Bufo americanus, or American toad. I am certainly not a herpetologist by any stretch, so someone please correct me if I am wrong!

Handsome fella he is, isn't he?

Very cool! That's a beautiful area that I haven't visited for perhaps 20 years, makes me want to go back. Thanks for posting the photos!

You are living quite the life there Mr. Bob.
Beautiful photographs.
The wine grape harvest and juicing is in full swing up there right now.
I just got some NY juice from my Hammonton supplier the other day and he will be hauling down more next week.
I guess you were feeling a little small when you got smoked by a 71 year old. :(
I think you should have invited him on a little jaunt across the Great Swamp down round here so you could knuckle him down a notch. :)
You'll finish it next time I am sure.
Let me know if you need some company.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing your trip with us Bob!! It has been about 6 or 7 years since I have been up there. I almost died on Chimney mountain (almost fell off the peak). Glad you got away for a bit.

Adirondacks pictures

I'm only getting a red x instead of the pictures. I tried to right click on the x to open but that didn't work either.

Bob's Adirondack thread didn't come back to me until I was driving through the same mountains over the past several days. The area is in transition mode now -- a lull between ski season and the late spring/summer surge. I found most of the parks closed; trails still had a foot-and-a-half of snow on them and, unless you walked down the center of these(where snowmobiles compacted the snow), you'd be up to your keister in white stuff.

I've quite some photos to look through and resize. Here's a trio for now. The first photo is one of the many, many lakes visited (Long Lake, in this case). The second was taken from a cemetery high on a hill. Eternal resting places with spectacular views get me. This particular space opened up to the High Peaks to the west. The final photo is of the same High Peaks, but from Lake Placid.

In a way, you could have, Guy. The sky was magical.

I decided to drive home by crossing over to Vermont and, quite surprised, took in the most beautiful site of the trip. Behind me sat the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, still covered in snow. In front of me were the Green Mountains of Vermont. And, the icing on the cake, from one stretch of road I took a glance to the northeast and something caught my eye. "No way," I thought. I had to reverse the car to regain the vantage and, sure enough, I could see all the way across the state of Vermont and into New Hampshire. On the horizon sat the Presidential Range of the White Mountains.

The trip was mirrored throughout by the music of a friend of mine, Jim Cole, of Spectral Voices. Godspace, The Way Beyond, Innertones, ...

The rivers were wild all over the Adirondacks. This one was no exception.

The trails were often snow-covered, and deeply so.

But the rewards at the end of the trails made it all worthwhile. (More grabbing clouds, Guy!)
