If it has pink blazes, it's the Batona Trail...if not then it's something else. I'm not sure what the second trail could be. The Batona continues closer to 72, joins the Cranberry Trail (red blaze), follows it to the end then turns right toward Pakim Pond.

Sorry TO, but I forgot to mention that the two trails are both shown on the Batona trail map. The one that goes towards Presidential Lakes is a red dashed line instead of the solid red line along 72.

Well, we put another 6 miles on the prosthetic today and let me tell you, it was good to put 72 behind us. I tried to talk my fellow hikers into taking the trail that cuts towards Presidential lakes but it was a no go since the trail was longer and we had a baby along for his first hike. He did well and didn't freeze.
I did notice a sign for the Mt Misery trail but didn't get a chance to read it. Is this a good trail and how long is it?
We're looking to do the Hedger House to Carranza Memorial next week. Should be a good hike.
Another question, what's in season right now? We saw a lot of hunters out today and heard some shots very close by.
Thanks and happy hiking.

Go on Sunday and you won't have to deal with that. How did the baby do?

Winter bow season goes to the end of the month, and I thought small game is the only other thing in season now, which might account for the shots you heard. I've seen several firearm hunters myself recently and was wondering about that. Although still open, small game is more of a put-and-take sport in NJ now, with most hunters concentrating on the days following fall stockings. Maybe they put out more birds late in the season.
