An interesting thing happened tonight

I was taking a night time drive through the burnt area near Atsion. Afterward, I crossed 206 and headed into the great swamp area on one of the lesser used roads. About a mile in I came across a large bon fire and a bunch of trucks hauling a$$ away from me. So I pulled up and realized that no one is left there by the fire. Just seats and coolers.

Clearly these guys thought I was a ranger or Park Police or whatever and were making a get away. So I pulled up to fire. It was large but in a big sandy open area, safe from igniting the woods. So I'm thinking, well I can't just leave the fire going here. They might come back, but then again, if they think they've been discovered they probably won't.

So I got my cell to call the forest fire service when I saw a very slight glimmer in the woods. I pulled the bronco around to shine my lights on it and sure enough, I could barely make out some dude on his stomach buried in the leather leaf. (the glimmer was his cell phone light)

I yelled out the window "hey buddy, it's alright I'm not a ranger." So this guy got up, tatoos up and down his arms, probably in his 20's and was looking like the cat that ate the canary.

He came walking up to my truck and I told him again that wasn't a ranger but he seemed very nervous, I explained that I knew why everybody took off but that they couldn't leave the fire unattended. So he started asking why I came up so "fierce". I explained to him that I didn't and that they just freaked. So then he says "why didn't you honk your horn, show me your badge"

So I tell him, a little irritated now, "I don't have a badge because I am not a ranger. Look at my truck...this is not a ranger's truck. Just relax, I couldn't let the fire just burn out here which is why I pulled up."

So then he seemed to relax a little but insisted that I hang out till the others showed up, he said there were about 25 of them out there. I told him that I wasn't going to hang out and he seemed to get a little nervous again. I told him that I wasn't going to call the rangers but he had to watch the fire and clean up after. He seemed to calm down then, I shook his hand and as I was leaving I heard him on the phone calling the others back.

So that's my story. I didn't call the rangers, or anybody else because I felt confident that the fire was under control.. I'm sure some reading this will think I should have called it in. There is an argument that I should have called it in after the fact, but I made a judgement call not to. what would you have done?

Interesting night.

A real tough situation Jeff. If the fire was not a threat I don't disagree with your decision to not call. I would probably call someone tomorrow (this morning) to report if your conscience if weighing heavy on you. The fact that they hauled ass out of there doesn't speak too well for their activites. We've all spent time out in the pines at night and maybe some of us have been involved in drinking/smoking etc. , but to clear out of there so fast you probably were driving up on god knows what?!?

Personally, I would not have exited my car. In any event, I would not tell the rangers. Since it was past tense they won't care, and it goes on all the time. They were just having fun.

You can see daylight savings time occur by noticing Tom's reply came before Jeff even posted his post :)

you did the right thing by leaving before the crowd came back. I had a run in with a bunch of idiots up near hamptom furnace in the early 90's. The pines really can be a different place after dark.

Thanks for your responses. I didn't exit the truck and I definitely wasn't going to hang around for the other 25 to show up. I think the guy I spoke with probably wanted the others to meet me to reassure them I wasn't going to call the troops out. Whatever the reason, it wasn't a situation worth putting myself in.

Back in the late 70's, early 80's you could find a bonfire and beer almost every weekend at Mt.Misery pit. It wasn't as scary because there would always be several people I grew up with( I went to the Pemberton school system from pre-first to high school). You could stop in and talk a while and then go on your way. The rangers didn't do anything because it was private property and it never got too crazy. A buddy of mine grew up in Tuckerton and would party by the first bridge at 7 Bridges Rd. and the cops didn't mess with them because they knew where everyone was.

Wow!!!
I was very young then but I remember on all night crabbing trips, my parents stopping off there on occasion. I would knock around in the dark by the waters and sometimes just curl up in the Truck and nap while they did whatever before we went off to crabbing in the early morns. My wife would cut my N**s off if I did the same thing with my kids in tow on a late Friday night nowadays.
Times have changed. Just to go back, just once.

Anymore I can barely make it past 11:00. The Phillies were killing me last week, especially the Sat./Sun. game. It took me a day to recover.

I used to live very close to the Mt. Misery pit. That sort of thing still goes on there but i can't say every weekend.

I guess I'm the odd-man out. I would have NOT got out of the vechicle nor would I have stopped, looked or spoken to anyone. I WOULD have called the Ranger, explaining that "I pull up to a group of kids, they got spooked and ran, while leaving a fire unattended". This is 2008 my friend, not 1978, 1988, or even 1998. Consider yourself lucky.
