It's wishful thinking but if enough of the canoe was left to be up to it,
What avid paddler wouldn't just love to take it out for a turn.
Imagine, 1500 + years old & coasting down the Mullica. Wow.

Probably the Mullica had this canoe paddling down it quite often 1500 years ago.

Very cool. But I never heard of this..."Tom caught sight of an odd looking wooden form hung up on a Queen City jetty."

Steve

Was focused on the Canoe issue itself, missed this.
Queen City.... Another, Older name/Nickname for Beach Haven, still used by locals.

Gee wis, what part of "'dug out' wooden canoe" does not fit into your definition of a real canoe? Of course I doubt a hollowed-out, shaped tree trunk would require an application of canvas!

Best regards,
Jerseyman

This is just a guess but I think/Hope Wis Bang's reference was on a positive note supportive of the the ancient canoe's construction as opposed to the many "plastic fantastic" models out today.

So Wis.... How 'bout that 1958 Old Town Wood & Canvas Octa??
Any lookin' I've done puts that thing pretty valuable. Hope you actually use it though. And yes, I would call it the equal to a crank start Auto.

Real wood, dugouts were the original...wood/canvas only refined the issue.

That's like saying real cars have a crank in the front to start it. :D

Come on! Have you ever paddled in a wood canoe?

all the rentals pass me in the slack water; I pass them in the white water...

Our canoe is the surrvivor of a fleet at Camp Hagan that was in Shawnee on the Delaware. Dad bought it from the caretaker for $45.00 & we used it alot while I was in college and after 17 years in storage I stripped it inside & out and re-varnished/painted and replaced the cane in the seats.

There is one sitting along the Delaware in Stockton, NJ. It is a 1923 Old Town HW or Yankee looks original w/ no rot, original cane in the seats but need to be re-canvassed so it isn't selling at the asking price of $1200.00

WCHA.org is a web site for the Woden Canoe Heratage Assn...
