I missed that Bob.

It appears that he was doing reconnaissance and was a surveyor, so high spots seem right.

The first line says:

Line Intervisible

That means

Intervisible \In`ter*vis"i*ble\, a. (Surv.)
Mutually visible, or in sight, the one from the other, as
stations.

The second line says:

Supposed to be intervisible with high ??

The third line says:

Interrupted by woods_____perhaps where the green dots are

And the last line is what you say:

Routes taken in the course of my reconnaissance

I wonder if this wasn't someone who was making corrections or additions to the map for Gordon, or they were making their own map using his.

If you look under google for NJ antique maps, you see a few that were reduced from this one, so maybe. I know one thing, with towers and a sight instrument like an optic telescope or theodilite, he should have been able to sight in on most of the hills from one straight line to the next one.
