I was there over the summer with my girls. The tower was staffed, and the observer on duty was a young guy who invited us up to the platform for a look around. It was a beautiful clear day, and the kids really got a kick out of seeing Atlantic City on one side, and Philly on the other.

One thing I read somewhere (I know, not helpful) is that it looks like an apple pie in profile (?)

Another possibility for the name is found in Marylin Schmidt's new book: Towns Lost but Not Forgotten: a woman goin up the hill accidentally smashed her apple pies

Did a short walk on the Batona Trail yesterday and went up Apple Pie Hill. Hadn't been up there in a couple years so it looked different from what I recall - the new fencing around the top of the hill - but the view is still great. Interesting to find a smashed computer, a printer and a couple pumpkins at the base of the tower. :bang: either the rangers got tired of slow internet service in the tower or someone had to make a statement about their own computer. Guess throwing them off the tower makes a great impact (pun intended). Still was a nice day out in the Barrens - plan to go back and look for the Sanitarium ruins other than the ones at the top of the hill.
