In this week's edition of the Central Record, the "Diversions" section features a book about the Pine Barrens, The Ecological Pine Barrens of New Jersey. It's a only a half page article, but it contains some interesting information. The book was written by Howard P. Boyd, a 93 year old pine barren expert whose passion is to protect the pines.

A few of the interesting facts:

There are 225 International Biosphere Reserves in the world, 40 in the US, the Pine Barrens being one of them.

1300 species of plants native to the Pine Barrens
160+ species of birds
35 mammals
33 reptiles
25 amphibians
28 fish
10000 arthropods + insects

Yea, your link is the article I was talking about. Also, he is doing a book signing:

"A book launch and signing with Howard Boyd will take place on Sunday, Sept.14, 2008, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA), Bishop Farmstead, 17 Pemberton Rd., Southampton."

Are you friends with him?
