AT hike

Hiked the At From VA 56 to spy rock. Climed the priest the first day in very heavy rain. 4.8 miles and about 3000 feet of elevation.

A nice place! Is there only one shelter there? If so, I would assume you have to share it with others who come along?

Nice! I love it. Great shots. I like that one "near the top". The sky always looks nice near the top. Closer to God.

The shelters are spaced about every 8-15 miles. It is proper to ask if there is room if you find someone there when you arrive. You should always carry shelter with you as you can not rely on the shelters.
We shared with two thru-hikers that night, which was great as they had tons of stories for us. Mosey was from Lancaster PA. and had spent summer 07 working for DEP in South Jersey out in the pines. We had some places in common. We had a roaring fire going by the time they showed up, and after a twenty mile day walking in the cold rain it was a welcome sight. Generaly the company at the shelters are the same kind of folks.

Anybody here read John McPhee's In Suspect Terrain? The book is also included in his geology-series compilation Annals of the Former World. It gives a real nice explanation of the Appalachians and its rocks, and of the mountains' rising and falling (three times) through the ages.

Nice report and photos, Grendel. I gotta say, you're one of many members that make this forum a treasure.

Anybody here read John McPhee's In Suspect Terrain? It's also included in his wonderful geology-series compilation Annals of the Former World.. The book gives a real nice explanation of those rocks, and of their rise and fall (three times!) through the ages.Bill

I am always amazed that the Adirondacks are made of rocks that were up to 18 miles below the surface at one time.
