Dragon, I was little when my grandfather told me about them. I do remember him saying "when I was a kid". So, he was born in 1898, so I'd say early 1900's. Sorry if your disappointed. However, I too am willing to bet there is a population of them down there somewhere, albeit a small one. I would love to know if and when you find them down there, Dragon.

The woods themselves are probably less disturbed now then back then except in winters by hunters but that would not affect the snakes anyway.Problem is was there ever a period of explotation as in a "Rattlesnake Ace " of Buckshutem? I would think if they were there you'd occasionally find DOR snake along Buckscrotem rd(670), Skeeterville road and Split Ditch roads (555) unless of course they are happy right where they are and do not migrate long distances. We need to design a Rattlesnake detector.

ChrisR, I had an account of them from 1860 in that basic area. The account was talking about a few dozen being killed when the den was found. They may still be there, but even where they are common they do a phenomenal job of staying hidden. The presence of them in an area really speaks to an areas wildness. Where they thrive is where we don't...I think thats why I like looking for them, the area is normally pretty quiet and relaxing.
