The state Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Clean Communities will sponsor a watershed-wide cleanup Oct. 19.
The DEP and NJ Clean Communities are hoping the event — dubbed the Barnegat Bay Blitz — will attract participation from all 37 towns in the area of the bay’s watershed.
In a news release from the DEP, the agency stated that it hopes for the event to become the state’s largest one-day stream and bay cleanup in history.
As part of the event, each municipality in the watershed will work with DEP staff members who will be team captains to coordinate bay cleanups with partners in the area.
Katie Barnett, co-chairwoman for the Barnegat Bay Blitz cleanup said she expects about 1,000 people to participate in the event.

Driving rain and a steady northeasterly wind met the volunteers participating in the Dpartment of Environmental
Protection's trash pick-up campaign along the shores of Barnegat Bay today.

DEP commissioner Bob Martin joined students from the MATES academy in Manahawkin as well as many from the top levels of DEP staff in picking up garbage out of the marsh at what is commonly known as the Bridge to Nowhere, a popular kayak launching spot.
The effort is part of the Barnegat Bay Blitz, the first expansive DEP-sponsored volunteer activity aimed at helping clean up the bay.
Eleventh-graders from the science- and technology-focused vocational school pulled beer bottles, paint cans and other man-made debris from the black mud, as rain gradually began falling harder. Martin also was in the marsh, plucking a full paint can and other trash from the mud.
Martin will be making an appearance at numerous clean-up sites during the day.
