We took a short hike, 5.6 miles, on the Batona trail between Bulltown and Evans Bridge yesterday. Along were Marianne, Willow a 6 year old great dane and 1 year old Buffy, a Jack Russell Terrier. Lots of time to sniff and picnic since Willow gets a bit creeky after longer hikes (so do I). Beautiful weather, no jacket or hat. I hadn't been on this section for more than a decade. Found two geocach's along the way. Another observation, just south of Evans Bridge on 563 there ore 4 memorials. Dead mans curve?

The road to the west of the bridge is trecherous, but to the east is good.

i think that might be my favorite bridge which i never knew the name of, is that bridge off of washington rd?

had the road wrong but it is the same bridge, thanks ed, that is one of my favorite spots in the pines.

looking at the google map i used to get there by old green bank washington rd, i would come in off of 563, we aleways called that washington rd, sorry for the confusion never really knew the correct names, thanks ed. also do you now the name of the lake back there?

No I don't but if you mean this little pond, it has obvious parking nearby, but I wonder if it dries up in summer (no fish0).

Good find Ed. I was there with Behr655 and Kendawg a few years back and visited the bridge and a few stones nearby. And right nearby is where Trailotter found the Merrill Wills stone and I went back and found another one. The link to the thread is below.

The monument you found is NJ45W with the W meaning Washington Township. The line stamped on it means it is not a corner, but rather a monument along the survey line. You can see the line going through the monument in this map.

Also notice it calls that road Haze’s Crossway. It was named after Hazelton Birdsall who in the 1850’s dammed the Bull Creek and built a sawmill and a glass factory. You can read more about him in “Heart of the Pines.” He was a fascinating individual from what John Pierce describes. He is buried in the Pleasant Mills Cemetery.

With that said, many modern topo maps show a different road as Haze’s Crossway.
