I'm pretty sure the tunnel under the dining room was brick, the one on the right hand side of the house was just dirt ( not really a tunnel) and I can't remember how the other one was held up. The only one you could really walk into was the third one I spoke of. Not sure if Wharton would have any wine around, he was quaker. Do quakers consume alcohol or would they back then?
Wharton owned three homes, his main house was in Philly (torn down), a second in Rhode Island I believe (still there) and of course Batsto. From what I was told Wharton did not come to Batsto very much and I have read letters where his wife complained of the mosquitos (not much has changed). One of his daughters lived for quite a while at Batsto and her bedroom was on the 2nd floor of the tower.
