All,

Al, Bob, Jessica, and I spend the morning and early afternoon roaming through the Bear Swamp near Dividing Creek. Al had been there many times before and was showing us the sites.

Spiders

A sea of ferns

Bob at one of the trees along our route.

Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum). This was high in the air so I just held up my camera and hoped for the best.

An unknown plant that had not flowered yet.

Mermaid Weed (Proserpinaca palustris)

This is similar to Pink Lady Slippers but not quite. We think it is cypripedium. We were a few weeks late but Whipperbill may have photo’s of it in bloom.

This is not my photo but this would be it...we think.

As usual my memory failed me on this one.

The ticks could easily be viewed waiting for us along the paths. They would hang out on the vegetation and as I put the camera close it would open up it’s front legs trying to grab on, at times almost falling to the ground.

A closer look. They are not your friend!

And on the ride home we saved this one from oncoming cars. It looks like it may need saving more often.

Thank you Al for the tour, and as always it was great seeing Bob again.

Good to go on those tick shots Guy!

Thanks Al, for hosting us Down Jersey. I had a good time. I'll see you down there again.

I ended up going along the Maurice River Bluffs on the blue trail, then I oozed on home slowly. I stopped in a couple spots. I spent a half hour on the side of the road near Mauricetown, and then some back roads by Leeds Point. I saw some sedges I want to come back and get near Mauricetown. I may already have them, but I want to be sure.

PS Guy, Cypripedium is the Lady Slipper Genus. I thought it may have been another species of that Genus, but apparantly not. The leaves give it away as Cypripedium acaule, the same one we have up here. They just grow a lot bigger Down Jersey.

ooze :D

I put that turtle down when you pulled over, and stuck my hand in poison ivy. I used my water bottle and Jessica had "wet ones" so hopefully all is well.

What was the name of this plant?

Excellent Guy! You are certainly spending more time down South these days. :)

It actually has been a few months since I have been down that way. I missed the barrens up this way and Jessica and I wanted to do some things on our own as we had in the past.

I was hoping to get photo's today of the Turkey Beard in full bloom but couldn't. I may be able to slip out tomorrow for a short time and capture that.

next time we can hit the big gums and maples (their bigger then the beeches) and the old blue hole which is quite beautiful and if you want to hit the purtiest barrens in jersey I'll take you there too if you like open heather studded barrens though the heather is probably starting to wane now.but of course the spring runs all year but you have to dig it out each time bacause it's at tide level and the high tide washes debris into it and it must be cleaned and given a few minutes to settle in the current before drinking.

Nice report Guy. Looks like an interesting area. I was out fishing with a friend all day and I thought I saw your car near carranza road, a little beyond Batona. I guess that wasn't you.

BTW: that last photo is of club moss, sometimes called ground pine. Nice photos.

I sure hope that 6 cans will last you more than a week!

If you walk out of your house and the scent of Permanone is in the air, you know Jim has been spraying over in the big city :D

I just finished treating 6 pairs of clothes plus my boots with the 6 cans of Permanone, the clothes are fermenting in a green trash bag all tied up, the next door neighbors ran into the house, the wind was blowing their way, i now smell like a Chemical Factory, now i am good for the Summer.:) Rule of thumb for me, one pair of clothes, one can of spray.

Oh... that's pretty heavy. I get at about two pairs (shoes, socks, jeans, tee shirt and possibly a long sleeved shirt) per can. It says 3 oz will treat a complete outfit and there's 6 oz in a can. I already dislike the idea of using something this strong, so I follow the directions.

i now smell like a Chemical Factory

Considering where you live, that's very funny!
