I had some unexpected free time open up this past Saturday, and since the last time that happened I went up to the Gap, I decided that I was overdue for a trip south.
I'd been wanting to explore the area around Baptist Road and Long Causeway some more, and in the end I wound up meandering from the radio towers all the way over to Quaker Bridge and Atsion, by way of Batsto. It was a fun trip (new shoes to try out on the FJ, 275 70R17 Wranglers), and since it culminated in a get-together with some friends at the Pic for wings, food, and brew it verged on awesomely excellent.
I didn't take too many pictures this time, but I did get one or two shots I thought you guys would find interesting.
This is the little bridge on Beaver Dam Rd., not far off of Jenkins. On the north side there is a small pond, while on the south the rusty water glides down to the Plains Branch.
The area right around here, meaning east of the pond on both sides of the road, is posted. I couldn't find a name for this pond or its outflow, but it's a pretty spot that I didn't explore for perfectly obvious reasons.
A little further out Beaver Dam Rd. you run into Radio Tower Rd. Here's a shot of the structures for which the road is named. This is supposed to be a government installation for aeronautical communications, but I suspect the topo might be out of date in that regard.
A shot across Oswego Lake from Jenkins Road on the north shore. It was a fairly warm-ish day, as those of you who were out know, but nothing like a "regular" sunny day in mid-July. If my experience is any guide, the flies like the cool weather, because there were a ton of them everywhere I went up in that NE quarter of the wood.
I believe this little guy was trying to cross Lost Lane Road. It might actually have been Jenkins. I was curious about the holes in his shell.
When I went in for the face shot he clammed up and acted very inhospitable. So I set him off in a shady part on the side of the road, hoping he might cheer up a bit.
Got to the King of Wings by way of Iron Pipe, Batsto-Washington, Goodwater, and Batona Trail roads. Here's the little bridge where Batona Trail Road crosses the Penn Swamp Branch. The water gauge was reading 1.5 if I recall correctly.
